Newcastle had a rather easy 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle at Home Park tonight, to get to 98 points – 9 points ahead of 2nd placed WBA and an amazing 23 points ahead of 3rd placed Nottingham Forest, and they will finish as Coca Cola Championship Champions.
What a season!
Plymouth opened at full speed and seemed to cause Newcastle some problems in the first few minutes of the game.
As Newcastle came more into the game, Andy Carroll missed a great chance on 19 minutes, when Danny Guthrie ran at the Plymouth defense. Danny put Andy Carroll straight through on goal with a great pass, but with the goal at his mercy from just 12 yards out, Andy’s left foot shot went way over the bar – a bid miss from Carroll.
But just one minute later Newcastle went ahead, and it was from Joey Barton’s out-swinging corner that Andy Carroll immediately made amends for his glaring miss, and his powerful header looped into the far corner of the net for the striker’s 18th goal of the season. How many times has Andy scored this type of header this season?
After 28 minutes Newcastle got their second goal, and it was again Joey Barton who set it up, as he put Wayne Routledge clear with a terrific through ball, and the winger raced clear and rounded goalkeeper David Stockdale, before slotting the ball home from an acute angle – a nice goal from the Newcastle winger.
Rather than go on defense, Plymouth started to attack Newcastle, and had most of the possession, during the final 15 minutes of the first half.
Joey Barton looked in fine form in the first half for Newcastle, and seemed a cut above the Plymouth players, and Fitz Hall looked very solid for Newcastle in central defense.
At half time the score remained at 2-0 to Newcastle.
On 52 minutes Kevin Nolan went so close, after being set up by Andy Carroll.
Nolan got the ball on the edge of the area and hit the ball on the turn, and his right foot shot only just cleared the Plymouth cross-bar.
Newcastle started to cruise through the second half and seemed content with their two goal cushion.
The Newcastle fans started to threaten to invade the pitch at the final whistle, and then a chant of “If Smudger scores we’re on the pitch” went up as the crowd seemed to dare Alan Smith, the captain, to score his first goal for the Tyneside club.
And the final whistle is blown and Newcastle have their 7th win in a row, and their 21st clean sheet of the season – and they have won the Championship.
Unfortunately Plymouth are now relegated to League One.
And we have to give the Plymouth club and the home crowd praise for being such a classy act tonight.
The Plymouth fans showed a banner “Well Done Newcastle – Champions” and at the end Queens’ We are The Champions” was played over the loud speakers..
A class act from Plymouth Argyle – especially when the club is now certainly relegated.
Job well done tonight by the Newcastle lads – once again – and one more win and we’ll break the 7 game winning streak record for the season, and also break the 100 points barrier.
So please go to this video – provided by reader AngerOfTheNorth – and see Queen performing “We Are the Champions” – because we are.
The boys in black and white have been brilliant this season, and have helped restore the pride on Tyneside.
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #12As for CH not giving youth a chance… Anyone think that maybe Kadar’s hamstring still hasn’t completely healed and therefore a full 90 minutes would have been a mistake? I’m certain Kadar will get plenty of chances if he deserves them.
As for Ranger, he’s held himself back. Carroll was little more than a reserve striker at the beginning of the season but broke his way in. Yet Ranger didn’t. Anyone wonder why..?
Regarding Inman, Vuckic etc, they’re still really young lads. If they were world beaters we might be playing them at their age but they’re not, so they’ll need to be brought along slowly.

Comment #16I have had several messages from friends tonight saying “Congratulations on your achievement in winning the title”. I would therefore like to issue the following statement:
“Thanks for all your messages of congratulation. But I must point out that I didn’t do it alone: the manager, players, and staff all played their part too. I will not be taking any questions.”

Comment #17Personally i think a BIG THANK YOU should go out to Pylmouth Argyle for being fantastic hosts. Despite going down they played “we are the champions” and “Local Hero”. I really feel for them because from what i saw tonight Plymouth were a decent side but without any end product. Massive thank you to the players of NUFC and C.Hughton for getting us up on the first attempt.

Comment #18One of the most enjoyable seasons as a Newcastle fan since the glory days of Shearer and Keegan! Thoroughly enjoyed every minute, relegation was for the best i think lads!\
Did everyone see Hughton’s interview, “it’s not about me personally, it’s about the team and the fans” – What a class act! Hope he gets to be Newcastle manager for a long time to come!

Well done boys, Chris, staff!!!!!! This is by no means a guarenteed acheivment and its be your comitment, hard graft and vision to undo the misery of relegation that finally got us here.
Oh and of course you, yes you who re reading this very post, the incredible fans, the 12th man who will be loyal to the club through thick and thin and whose support this season has been without equal!!!!

Comment #25A great game, a fantastic effort from PAFC with the banner etc (Hope they bounce back up next season for that one). Only negative for the night was Guthrie’s inability to pass the ball in the 2nd half, don’t like selfish play, so sort it out Danny, or its back to Bolton for you boy!
