Forster And Krul Will Push Steve Harper Next Season

9:44 am, Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 10 Comments

Steve Harper has come out today and said how tough it has been this year in the Championship.

Steve Harper – season has been tough

Most Newcastle fans will immediately think it’s going to be a lot harder next season, because the sides  in England’s top league are so much better than in the Championship.

So if this season’s tough, watch out for next season.

Steve said today:

“When you have got 23 games at home in front of a massive crowd full of expectation and 23 cup finals away from home, it’s very tough.”

“People say, ‘Newcastle United, this sort of budget, big club, should bounce back’, but this is a very tough league.”

“There are some very good players in this league who deserve the opportunity to play Premier League football and who want to play Premier League football next year.”

So if there are lots of very good players in this league, we wonder if Chris Hughton has some of the top players in the Championship already lined up to buy in the summer – we’ll have to wait and see.

And of course it will be another party scene on Saturday afternoon, when the lads take on Ipswich in the last home game of the season in front of a sell-out crowd at St. James’.

Harper added:

“It’s great that we will receive the trophy in front of a full house on Saturday – but nobody wants to pick it up after a defeat, after the Lord Mayor’s Show, or whatever.”

“We will be looking to come out flying on Saturday, put on a good display and rightfully pick up a trophy that everybody at the football club deserves.”

Steve will have a tough time next season keeping the number one jersey too, with Tim Krul and Fraser Forster both getting better all the time, and at some point Chris Hughton will need to assess who his best goalkeeper really us.

Both younger goalkeepers will be hoping to press for the starting place, when the pre-season starts in early July.

And we have to think one of the two younger goalkeepers will go out on loan next season, to get some playing time, much like Fraser has done this season at Norwich, and has been in outstanding form.

But Harper has had an excellent season for Newcastle, and his experience at the back has been vital for the Newcastle side this season.

Comments welcome.

I hope Krul and Ranger both go out on loan to Championship clubs….and any other youngster who feels he is not playing enough to develop. Send em out!!!!!

Krul won’t be here next season…he wants 1st team football and won’t get his chance while he remains with us.

No one is a bigger fan og Steve Harper than me I can honestly say. I´ve been routing for him to be picked over Shay Given because I honestly feel he is the better keeper. But now we have two outstanding young keepers. Then we have Soderberg as well who I don´t know as much about. Steve Harper just has to go. This season. We just can´t risk losing the biggest young goalkeeping talent there is. Just look at Arsenal. If they had had an outstanding keeper they´d be champions. It matters so much. Steve Harper is a fantastic keeper but those young ones are going to be even better. They are closing in on Steve and are just as good imo. They might make some mistakes but we need to take the chance. They are both world class.

    Johann

Harper is more than just our goalkeeper, he is probably the most expirienced player in the team, he is a role model and it is up to Krul and Forster to prove they are better than him, he’s established, they are not. Harper has been one of the main reasons we’ve been so good this season, IMO he’s our player of the season above Nolan, Caroll and the Latin trio. 21 clean sheets is amazing! Young players need to learn their trade before being relied on, i’d personally like to see Forster go back to Norwich where he will play every game and at a higher level than last season, due to their promotion, therefore progressing his experience and Krul be given both cups, just like Arsenal do with their young players.

And risk losing them both? I agree with the Harper statement and all that but young goalkeepers need their chance to show they can be relied on. They haven´t had that. Well krul got that when Harper got injured. Played well but as soon as Harper returned from injury Krul was replaced. Where the heck is the fairness in that?

Harper waited years to play with Given in the team, because he loves the club. Like i said, makes perfect sense to test Forster at championship level with Norwich where he has been developing nicely this season. And give Krul the responsibility of the cups. They still have a lot to learn, neither are going to marshall the defence like Harps does.

But if they think otherwise. Do you think it´s worth losing them both to keep Harper? We shouldn´t base our decision on a keepers past. He´s got paid for what he did in his past he shouldn´t be guaranteed first place just because he´s a loyal servant. Doesn´t feel right.

I don’t see why we’d lose both, but yes i do think it is worth losing one. Because i would hate to go into next season without Harps. Above all else he has the ability now and that is what counts, he will make saves and command his area better than Forster and Krul are capable of in the premier league. Simple as that really.

Give Harper one more season, Krul his back-up and send Forster on-loan (heard Birmingham might be interested). Beyond that I believe one of them should be ready to step up.

first of all, now we have won the title, I seriously hope we can give our hot prospects a chance, like Krul and Kadar, for me they must play in the last two matches, it gives them hope, and they deserve to have their chances….or what is the point of signing top young prospects but never give them a chance…especially in championship

also whenever I look at the so called top euro young Gk like Lloris or Neuer etc, I cant stop think Krul is far better than them, frankly, he can easily play regularly first team football in euro…we are wasting him potential

as much as I love Harper, Krul should be given a fair chance to compete this season, which it didnt happen, (like Johann says)….I hope Hughton will start Krul more next season, or we can just let him go
