Steve Harper has come out today and said how tough it has been this year in the Championship.
Steve Harper – season has been tough
Most Newcastle fans will immediately think it’s going to be a lot harder next season, because the sides in England’s top league are so much better than in the Championship.
So if this season’s tough, watch out for next season.
Steve said today:
“When you have got 23 games at home in front of a massive crowd full of expectation and 23 cup finals away from home, it’s very tough.”
“People say, ‘Newcastle United, this sort of budget, big club, should bounce back’, but this is a very tough league.”
“There are some very good players in this league who deserve the opportunity to play Premier League football and who want to play Premier League football next year.”
So if there are lots of very good players in this league, we wonder if Chris Hughton has some of the top players in the Championship already lined up to buy in the summer – we’ll have to wait and see.
And of course it will be another party scene on Saturday afternoon, when the lads take on Ipswich in the last home game of the season in front of a sell-out crowd at St. James’.
“It’s great that we will receive the trophy in front of a full house on Saturday – but nobody wants to pick it up after a defeat, after the Lord Mayor’s Show, or whatever.”
“We will be looking to come out flying on Saturday, put on a good display and rightfully pick up a trophy that everybody at the football club deserves.”
Steve will have a tough time next season keeping the number one jersey too, with Tim Krul and Fraser Forster both getting better all the time, and at some point Chris Hughton will need to assess who his best goalkeeper really us.
Both younger goalkeepers will be hoping to press for the starting place, when the pre-season starts in early July.
And we have to think one of the two younger goalkeepers will go out on loan next season, to get some playing time, much like Fraser has done this season at Norwich, and has been in outstanding form.
But Harper has had an excellent season for Newcastle, and his experience at the back has been vital for the Newcastle side this season.
