Barcelona Want Newcastle’s Steven Taylor

News today in Spain that Barcelona are thinking of doing a swap deal with Newcastle for center-back Steven Taylor in return for their aging star and captain, Carles Puyol.

They’ve got to be kidding!

Steven Taylor – with CC Championship Trophy

Taylor, a 24-year-old Geordie, who was born in Greenwich of Geordie parents and has spent all but a few weeks of his life on Tyneside, seems to be in great demand these days.

As we had warned earlier, there will many stories this summer of both Steven and Andy Carroll leaving the club, because of their bust-up a few weeks ago.

But Chris Hughton is no fool, and he’s already said the two have made up, and there are no problems between there.

In fact we are hoping Steven can play in our last game this Sunday against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday afternoon..

Spanish newspaper Sport is reporting that the European Champions are looking at the possibility of having Taylor play in Spain, while trying a swap deal with Carles Puyol, their 32 year-old Spanish star.

Carles is a one club player and has been at Barcelona all his career, playing an amazing 473 games for the Spanish giants, and has appeared 81 times for Spain.

It’s actually a compliment that they are interested in Taylor and yet another reason why we have to keep both local lads, Steven and Andy at the club for next season.

Of course Taylor has already been linked with moves to Everton, Birmingham City, Fulham and Aston Villa, and there are more clubs he’ll be linked with shortly – including Arsenal.

No way should Newcastle let these two budding stars leave the Tyneside club.

Comments welcome.

    Such rubbish!

But on your point Ed your bang on. Its essential we keep both Tayls and Big Andy, I reckon they have a huge part to play next year and as local boys (and with the characters they seem to have anyway) you know there gonna be giving 100%.

Somehow I don’t think Puyol will accept 25k per week.

What paper was this like, El Toroshit?

Complete garbage, can you imagine the Barca fans reaction! haha.

What would you realistically take for Taylor though? Say city came in with a stupid bid or a swap deal for say, Santa Cruz? You’d have to admit, you would consider it.

City paid how much for Santa Cruz? 17mil or sumthin?
Taylor at max would be worth 8 – 9 mil?
Hypothetically wood anyone take a deal involving a swap for the 2 and say 7 mil to city?
Or is Taylor to good a prospect to let walk?
I think if i was the brains behing this deal i wood take it and then focus my attention on signing Rami who is only about 25!
It won’t ever happen but jus wondeing what others wood do?

@Scotttoo – I don’t particular rate him much as a defender (makes mistakes) but doesnt matter because Taylor is family and we don’t sell our Geordie boys to anyone.

Santa Cruz would only be good if it was a loan deal. Much rather get Carlos Vela on loan though

to be fair we need to keep him for that new rule about 6 plyers from your youth team that have been at your club for more then 2 years but if some one came in for him i wouldnt turn them down can you remember when he wanted to leave only 10 months ago untill no one wanted him !!!!!

I agree with the Vela loan deal idea but i dont think we wood be able to pry him away from the gunners but that wood depend on who arsenal sign in the offseason?

@scotty00 – well I’m hoping CH and Ashley can persuade Wenger to let us have VELA and WILSHIRE on loan for the season. Not a penny spent on either of them and they would improve us dramatically

Only players I would never sell as Owner of the club (if I was lucky)

ENRIQUE – Sheer class and irreplaceable
VUCKIC – The future of this club

Everyone else has their price. Someone offered £15 million for Taylor than I’d take it.

there’s no way in hell santa is worth 17 mio now.. he didn play much..is 30 & city dont need money… but i’d take him only on loan.. as for this taylor thing…i dont think he’ll leave…espeacially for barca… spanish league is a mess..25 points difference between the 1st & 3rd?? wtf is that? certanly not a challenge. premiera devision is loosing it.. teams are on a verge of bancrupcy, but they have some experienced, talented players who could do the job for us..puyol NOT being one of them.. he was class about 3-4 seasons ago..but lately he’s aweful & old.. i wouldnt take him for free.. krkic on the other hand..that’s who id like to see partnering carroll.

So. This morning Barca were reported as wanting Taylor.

No surprise then that the story has changed, within the few hours since then.

It now appears that we are and have been chasing Puyol!

Nobody will give us money for Xisco, he has been awfull in Spain this year. Just get him off the pay roll

SMITH – I would take £6 million but CH would never sell him

BEST – I’d give him away for free. A bad egg and not good enough for the PL. £1 million back to Coventry. But CH has said Best will be part of his plans next season

AMEOBI – I honestly can’t believe he is still here. How many times has he been on the verge of leaving only for the deal to fall through. He has been very slow and completely out of his depth in the PL every season he played. I would take £4 million for him. But again, CH will not sell him.

The player we currently have that I don’t see the point of is RYAN TAYLOR. I mean what does he do?

But the thing CH has to be careful about and I’m sure he is aware of it — is not to break up the current team. They are buzzing and full of confidence and have a real togetherness.

So I think our policy will be players coming in, and not going out.

Taylor gave an interview on TV 2 weeks ago where he said he is looking forward to playing Premier League football with Newcastle (is on youtube)

The rumours about him leaving are from the media circus who assume he’ll leave because of an incident with Carroll. But whatever happened between them as clearly been sorted out.

Puyol is being touted to clubs by his Agent, because Pep wants a younger centre back to play with Pique. That’s what the proper broadsheets in Spain are saying.

As a close follower of Barca, I’m quite sure this will not happen. FCB have several young central defenders (Caceres on loan at Juventus, plus Fontas and Bartra) ready to step in as fourth choice when (as is widely believed) Rafa Marquez leaves in the close season. They are all better on the ball than Taylor, and this is crucial for FCB.
Puyol’s versatility (he has played all four positions in the back this season), the fact he is a Barca product and Catalan, and the fact he is captain, make it very hard for Guardiola and Begiristan to part with him.
Also, we can’t afford him and we certainly can’t afford two freaky-haired central defenders!

To be honest, id have to think about it if they offered us Puyol. Aye, hes gettin on a bit, but my word hes class.

Then again, Taylor could be world class.. Maybe if they threw in a loanee or two as part of the deal??

All hypothetical of course as the chance of their being any truth in this is slim to none.

when (as is widely believed) Rafa Marquez leaves in the close season

He wont be going anywhere, he’s just signed a new two-year contract with Barcelona.

This story is rubbish anyway, why are people wasting time discussing it.

If you want to discuss realistic transfer, think Pompey, Hull players etc.

i wouldnt take puyol for free.. htf can u say he’s world class?:D he’s rubbish…has been for the past few years… just cos he plays for barca doesnt make him good defender ( it’s like saying valdez is good goalkeeper 😀 😀 ).. if there werent for those midfielders..their style of play..barca would get 70 goals per season:) he sucks…but i admit..he was class about 4 seasons ago…

anyway..dont even think about bringing him here..only if u want to sell some of the jersies i guess..

Ameobi may not set the world alight – but he definately has goals in him and on his day is more than a handful for defenders. And he does chip in with a decent haul of goals every season (remember the season he played under Roeder).

No Sir – Amoebi should not be sold. He’s a local academy lad, is a more than decent squad player in the PL and is known to score a few goal. We will definately be needing him

@bakerman – the point is more that everyone has their price at a football club, thats all.

personally i wouldn’t sell anyone in the summer. keep that dressing room together

And yeah, will be good to see two Geordies leading the line next season
