When you look at some up-and-coming players who could do a job for Newcastle next season, you don’t have to look further than Tom Cleverley, Manchester United’s 20 year old winger.
Tom Cleverely – would be great acquisition by Newcastle
Tom is a skillful winger who can score goals, and the 5’9″ Basingstoke-born player currently has amassed 50 first class appearances with 13 goals in his two loan spells at Leicester and Watford.
Tom was on loan at Leicester in season 2008-2009 and played 15 times with 2 goals while at Filbert Street. And of course this season he has been on loan at Watford, where he’s played 35 times with 11 goals and has had a very good season.
Whether Manchester United would be willing to sell the player this summer is unknown, but at least Newcastle could try to get him on a season-long loan deal on Tyneside, with a view to signing the youngster in the future.
He would be an exciting player for Newcastle to sign, and of course his best years are still ahead of him, and he would offer excellent competition to Gutierrez and Routledge on either Newcastle wing next season, and would get plenty of playing time.
Cleverley was brought up in Bradford, and joined their Youth system before Manchester United acquired him when he was just 15 in 2005.
While he usually plays on the wing, he is also more than a capable defender, so he seems flexible too.
He would be a great buy in the summer for Newcastle United, there’s not much doubt about that.
Comments welcome.

Ferguson has already said that Cleverly will stay and get his chances for Manchester this season.

(Darren) Ferguson believes the attacking midfielder will not be going out on loan next season and will stay at Old Trafford despite interest from other clubs.
“He is a big part of their first-team plans. Tom is player I know plenty about, I tried to get him when I was at Peterborough.”
“There is no truth in the fact that he is going to come here, or for that matter, anywhere else. I’m pretty certain of that after speaking to my dad, he’s going back to United”

Comment #4Seems like any warm body who can lace on a pair of boots “would be a good acquisition for Newcastle” For me, there is a solid core for next season with some spots open for top class players and some depth required. I’d be looking at the Benton base and quality PL types, not take a joy ride on a bunch of promising prospects. It seems every team NUFC faced this season had a lad or two who would look good in a black & white shirt. But, those are Championship players & NUFC is getting ready to meet the big boys again. CH needs to go into those matches with a loaded gun, not just possibilities of power. So I say go into the market and find those who have not lost their self esteem or motivation with a team going down, or willing to choose NUFC as their team of choice.

Comment #5Such a shame if Fergie Jrn’s comments are true, he would have been in my top 3 to sign.

Comment #6From what I have seen of him this season I was very unimpressed. Average looking player in the champ and certainly nothing better than what we already have.
He will no doubt be rejected by ManU (he’s not gonna cut it there) and I hope he doesnt come he. Would be another Simpson type deal IMO and we should look elsewhere.

Comment #7I would happily bet a large sum of dosh that Newcastle dont sign ANYONE thats mentioned in any of these articles or any other articles on similar sights.
Hughton does not allow his tranfer interests to escape and we knew almost nothing of our recent incomings, why expect that to change?
Thats the way it should be.

Comment #8Just wondering what has Cleverley done to be afforded such high praise?
From what I have seen of him this season I wouldn’t touch him. He played well at SJP earlier in the season and……. well thats it. Does it warrant him baing chucked into what will be a relegation scrap with as yet, no PL appearances to his name? NO

Comment #9Cleverley is overrated. He’s a good player and all but he’s not EPL standard just yet, give him another year or two and he’ll be a decent player in the Prem. Also why sign players for the future that won’t be as good as our players for the future. Silly IMO. What we need are players that will be able to perform next year. Anything extra is a bit pointless with the youth squad we’ve got at the moment

From the ‘He’s young and Man United are his parent club so he must be great’ school of thinking. Unfortuntely the real world doesnt work like that.
Of course if he turns out to be a star player for Man U in the future I will gladly eat my words but from what I have seen of him so far I wouldnt hold my breath.

Comment #14Interesting potential signing. Has the potential from what I have seen of him, but shouldn’t we be looking towards more experienced players for the 1st season back in the Premier League?

Comment #15To be honest, I haven’t watched enough of Cleverly to give an opinion. I know he is coveted by most Championship managers, but is he good enough for a regular gig in the Prem. His versatility sounds like a plus, but in my exerience versatility offten works against young players getting on the pitch at SJP. If it hadn’t been for major injuries to first team players we would never had seen the likes of Steve Watson and Aaron Hughes getting a game for us as they were always the plan B on the bench back in the days of 3 subs.

Comment #16Talking about potention mind, how come nobody seems to have come in for Johnjo Shelvey from Charlton? He has always looked class and given his age he should get better? Just a thought.

Comment #20I wish we could get Ireland on a free but I dont think we could pay him enough. I dont think we need Cleverly, I’d rather see Vukic being given game time to come through

Comment #21McGeady could be a worthwhile option to consider. As for incoming players I agree with EddCase. I hope we can rely on CH being a canny lad in the transfer market – Fat Man permitting of course!

Comment #22Mcgeady is a star and wood be newcastles best winger if he came next year…probably woodn’t c much change out of 8 or 9 mil tho!
If we want carroll to continue to develop we need to focus on our wings….go out and get Mcgeady!
Then look at getting that poacher type striker…i think we could probably get one for 3-5mil….the only issue is its den all up to how many loan spells and free transfers we can get?
I hope we sign charlie adam and at least put in a bid for johnjo shelvey, joe ledley, jamie o’hara, a CDM?
