Newcastle ended their magnificent season at QPR this afternoon, with another clean sheet, their 22nd of the season, and the 30th win of the campaign, as a beautiful Peter Lovenkrands goal after 71 minutes was enough to get the Tyneside club all 3 points, and take them to a massive 102 points for the season.
The game was very even in the first half with both teams having their moments, but then the game was turned on its head just after half time.
On 46 minutes Leon Best put Shola Ameobi clean through on goal, and Peter Ramage slid in to bring down the Nigerian-born striker, and it was an obvious foul as Peter clipped Shola’s heels.
Since Shola was clean through on goal the referee had no choice but to send Peter off – and against his home-town club too.
Ramage looked completely devastated as he trudged off the field but the Toon Army gave the former Newcastle man a tremendous ovation – that’s what you get when you give 100% every single game.
Unfortunately the foul was committed outside the penalty area, and the resulting free kick from Joey Barton hit the QPR wall and was easily cleared.
After 54 minutes, Danish striker Peter Lovenkrands came on for Leon Best, who seemed to have some kind of muscle strain – so we’ll have to wait until next season for Leon’s first goal for the club.
And then on 71 minutes Newcastle went ahead with a great goal from Peter Lovenkrands – his 16th goal of the season.
And it was Joey Barton who set up Peter with an excellent through ball for the Dane to run onto, and although the angle was narrow, Lovenkrands showed all his skill as he chipped the ball brilliantly beyond goalkeeper Radek Cerny and into the net.
Let’s hope the Danish selectors see that goal – brilliant!
Then on 78 minutes Newcastle made a double change as Andy Carroll and Haris Vuckic replaced Shola Ameobi and Danny Guthrie
The game then essentially petered out to a Newcastle win to end the season, and that’s an unbeaten streak of 17 games, with 13 wins and 4 draws to end off the season.
And it’s also the very last time the team will wear those yellow strips – as we look forward to the new strips from Puma being announced very soon.
The lads have been just fantastic this season and win the league by 11 points from WBA who got an injury time goal to draw at home with Barnsley 1-1.
Nottingham Forest drew 2-2 at Scunthorpe United after being two goals up at the half, so Newcastle get automatic promotion by a massive 23 points.
For the record the lads have 30 wins, 12 draws and only 4 defeats for the season and have scored more goals than any other team in the Championship – 90 – and have conceded the fewest goals – only 35.
And right at the end of the game it was somehow appropriate that the Toon Army were in full voice with a banner waving in the wind …..
“Proud to be a Geordie. We’ll support you evermore”
