It’s not often you get a youngster come out and praise the man who’s keeping him out of the first team.
Tim Krul – praises Steve Harper
But that’s what’s happened today as Time Krul, the Dutch Under-21 goalkeeper of the future at Newcastle, who played very well yesterday at QPR, has done today, as he has praised Newcastle number one Steve Harper.
Tim told the Evening Chronicle today about Harper:
“He’s done extremely well this season, and I can’t say much more than praise him.” “He’s still one of the top keepers in the game and in the Premier League.”
“He’s been there for me – he’s not just for himself.” “I’ve not played a Premier League game yet, and that’s always been my dream.”
“Hopefully, that comes true next season. I’ll try hard to get some games, but I’ve got a hard man to beat.”
Krul – who is now said to be a target for Serie A side Juventus this summer, will also have 22 year-old Fraser Forster joining him, when pre-season starts in July.
It wouldn’t be much of a move for Tim to join Juventus, with 32 year-old Gianluigi Buffon at the club, and one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and likely to play until he’s at least 40 years old.
However, Tim is (and should be) very ambitious, and he wants the number one jersey at Newcastle, and there is already a rivalry growing between Tim and Steve.
Tim Krul continued:
“I always want to play, and the manager knows that.” “We spoke to Harps, and they said the QPR game was mine.”
“I’m really pleased, especially with the way it went. I’m really happy. I have to thank Steve and goalkeeping coach Paul Barron as well.”
“Before the game, Steve just said to me, ‘compose yourself – don’t do anything crazy, and everything will be fine’.”
“Luckily enough, everything went well. It’s great to keep a clean sheet, and hopefully next year I can do something in the Premier League.”
We have to think that say in five years time, when Tim will likely be the number one goalkeeper at Newcastle, his goalkeeping coach could well be Steve Harper himself, who we have to think will end up at Newcastle as a coach, in some form or fashion.
The longest serving player on Newcastle’s books – 17 years at the club – would be welcomed back as a coach at his home-town club – but he’s still got a few seasons left as a top-class goalkeeper at Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

Comment #44sigurrdsson – yes please, along with whittingham, adam and connor whickham.
bit late off the mark – but just read through some posts with people seriously moaning that hughton should be sacked for failing to blood youngsters this season. I occasionally,, not very often,, but occasionally feel sick to my stomach reading the twisted drivel on here.

Comment #45tad worried regarding CH… yes of course he deserves his chance in the prem with his team and yeah we’ve done well this term, but i cant help thinking that we’ve not conceded lots in the CCC due to our oppositions attackive play not being great, rather than our defence being impenetrable, and likewise our strikers being adequate against CCC defences.
ok, its not all down to chris and the team needs to be improved… but his style has not always being whats needed… rarely this term have we cut defences apart and shredded a team as a whole… the matches have been quite droll and we’ve nicked the odd goal… our opposition in the prem will be a different kettle of fish

Comment #52Yeah, I’ve noticed that there seems to be a few leaders, that a lot of people suck up to.
I’m quietly confident about next year. I think we do need a few places adding to (ST, CM?, RB, WG?). I think we also need quite a bit more depth as well.
I’m hoping we can get 13th-15th because quite a lot of teams are poorer than us. The only real problems I can see us having are injuries or lack of form. Home form’s gonna be crucial. 10 wins at home and you’re nearly safe.
What do you think, like?

Comment #53definitly 10 home wins will see us safe… my major concern is our lack of creativity.. yes we have players that have moments but even in the CCC we only see glimpses… i’m worried those “glimpses” might be few and far between in the prem… dont get me wrong, i have faith in a lot of the characters we have… Nolan i think will be invaluable… he’s spent his career battling against the odds… and i look forward to seeing Routledge, carroll, colo, guti, guthrie and the like, and how they will perform… as a “team” i think we’re quite strong, the mentality is there, but how will that mentality stand up when the chips are down and we’re not on winning runs?
y’know.. my worries are the same as every fans! some chaps deserve a lot of praise for this season and most definitely we need some new faces… but those faces have to fit in with the current mentality… CH has to be very astute with the people he brings in, and to be honest, on past performance, he’s done really well… so, optimistic? yes… wary? hell yes!

Comment #54Yeah, I think we might need some creativity. When Guthrie’s playing, he IS playing, it’s just some games he seems to drift around the middle of the park a bit.
I agree Nolan’s gonna be important next year, but I think he should only start most away games, because of how well he plays off Carroll. when he’s in a normal CM position although he’s good, I think Guthrie and Barton are better.
I think our mentality during a losing streak will be better than next season, but I think we’ll have to rely on Nolan, Carroll, Taylor et cetera a lot.
Their attitudes could well keep us up next season.
