It is being reported today that Dutch club PSV have agreed a £5M fee with AZ Alkmaar for potential Newcastle target – striker Jeremain Lens.
Jermain Lens – to sign for PSV Eindhoven
The news was that Newcastle had some interest in the striker, as had Wolves, Wigan, Sunderland and Fulham, for the highly-rated 22-year-old, but it would appear he will shortly sign for Dutch club PSV.
The player himself said today:
“Both sides have talked about the transfer fee and the last thing I heard was that they had come to an agreement. “
“Then I have to reach an agreement with PSV. Until Sunday, myself and AZ were focused on competition and now I will deal with the transfer.”
Lens has recently gained a place in Holland’s training squad for South Africa, and has apparently been preferred to Hamburg and former Manchester United striker – 33 year-old Ruud van Nistelrooy – who is now way past his best of course.
This will be one of many players that Newcastle will seem to miss out on during the summer, but of course we have no real idea whose Chris Hughton’s targets actually are, and Chris usually plays his cards very close to his chest, so we may never know, until the signings are made.
But we have a quiet confidence in Chris, because he seems to know a good player when he sees one, and he has already said he will go after quality, rather than quantity this summer, and that is just fine with us.
If Chris really does have this lad as a Newcastle target, and Chris really wants him, we would expect Newcastle to move very quickly in the next few days, as they showed they could do in January.
But not to worry, there are many good young players available, that Newcastle can sign this summer.
