Newcastle Still Said To Be After Motherwell’s Mark Reynolds

News in the Journal today that Newcastle may be after Motherwell defender Mark Reynolds.

Mark Reynolds – Motherwell’s 22 year-old Scottish U21 International

This is not the first time we’ve been linked with the 22 year old Scot, and he has confirmed that he could be playing his last game tonight for the Motherwell side against Hibs.

Motherwell manager Craig Brown has admitted there has been interest in his player over the last year or so, and the lad has already been linked with Fulham, Blackburn Rovers and PSV Eindhoven.

Indeed Glasgow Rangers made a bid for the player 21 months ago, and the bid was said to be around £750K.

Reynolds has been watched several times by Newcastle scouts this season, although the player has refused to reveal his likely destination.

But it could be that a move is very close as Mark said today:

“It’s out of my hands. I have a year left at Motherwell and we need to see what happens in the summer. If someone comes in, it would be something I’d have to consider.”

“I have played four years at Motherwell and been involved in practically every game in that period. That’s 170-odd games and two European campaigns.”

“There is not much left to do. That’s no disrespect to the club, but as a player you always want to go and test yourself at the highest level. For me, that point might come this summer.”

“Next year, I will be 24 and the club wouldn’t receive any compensation for me if I was to move then. If the club want to cash in, as it were, and get the money for bringing me through then the summer would be the optimum time to do that.”

The 5’11” player was born in Motherwell and has played 164 times for his home town club with 5 goals – ands he turns 23 this Friday.

He has 8 appearances for the Scotland U21 side, and has played once for the Scotland B team.

He’s the type of player we expect Newcastle to sign this summer, being young with big improvement still possible, and fairly cheap in the transfer market.

But it would be a bit of a surprise if we bring in another central defender with Steven Taylor, Coloccini, Mike Williamson and Tamas Kadar already at the club.

Even though we have several central defenders already this Reynolds would be a useful young addition. After all – Steven Taylor and Kadar can be used as full backs if necessary. Younger Scottish defenders worth checking out could be Daniel Wilson (18) of Rangers and Chris Mitchell (21) of Falkirk.

Too short? Daniel Wilson is at 6 foot 1 inch and Chris Mitchell may be too short at 5 foot 9 inches. How about John Fleck as a striker from Rangers?
Has caught the eye of the big Premier clubs and is a handful at 5 feet 6 inches.

He is a bit short for a central defender but he has the attributes to counter that as he has shown himself to be a defender who is quick in both body and mind (sounds like a Red Bull advert). If you want proof then look to the fact that from his 170 games played he has picked up only 8 yellow cards and only a solitary red. That shows a defender who picks his tackles wisely instead of jumping in wildly and picking up needless cards when there’s little danger.

Add to the that the fact that he has performed very well at LB and as a holding midfielder and we’d have a very good utility player on our hands.

Surely not..he’s just not good enough, if we wanna get relegated fair enough sign players of this calibre. Geordiemeerkat the fact he only has 8 yellows is that Scottish football is still stuck in the 80’s. Refs generally don’t pull players up for the tackle from behind and the game revolves around physicality rather than any sort of technique.

Never seen him play but if Dorrans can go from 100,000 to 10 million in a year why cant anyone else.

And too short? Cannavaro is two inches smaller and won player of the year before.

Wasn’t he part a defence that conceded SIX goals last night against the mighty Hibs (who are obviously as class as the Prem sides we’ll be facing next season!!!)…. I know one man doesn’t make a defence but surely this counts for somthing..!

I hope we get linked with better quality than this in the coming weeks…
