Newcastle Reportedly After Ipswich Sensation Connor Whickham

News today that Newcastle may be after Ipswich sensation, 17 year-old striker Connor Whickham.

Are Newcastle after this lad?

The Colchester-born 6’3″ striker has so far played for Ipswich 28 times with 4 goals, and of course scored a great goal against Newcastle on 24th April.

He made his debut for Ipswich about a year ago when he had only just turned 16 years old (16 years and 11 days), and only turned 17 on 31st March – so he’s still very young.

He started his football career at the Reading Youth Academy in 2006, but last year moved to Ipswich Town, and is now playing first team football.

But if this lad is as good as he seems to be, some top clubs will be after him quickly.

And the reports already say that Harry Redknapp at Spurs is willing to offer Ipswich £5M for the player, and then let him immediately play on loan at Ipswich Town.

Following this report on Tuesday,  Ipswich manager Roy Keane said he would be lynched if he were to let Wickham leave the Tractor Boys.

Connor has played 9 times for the England U17 team with 6 goals.

We’ll stay tuned on this one.

A worthwhile capture methinks. But, will we have the cash to match offers for him from other clubs? As has been pointed out old ‘arry’ is sniffing about it seems. This lad ia talent and should be developing his craft alongside NUFC players.

Ed – ha thought you’d do the whickham piece today. It was in the daily stale yesterday..

I agree with the principle. As a club you set your stall out for immediate impact signings of the superstar variety – i.e. man u/ liverpool/ city.

We’ve been there eh, but I like the idea of us now building up a squad of players under the £1-5 mil watermark, under 26, technically gifted with an emphasis on pace.

The arsenal/ villa (o’neil) model. We shouldn’t be afraid to source players from the lower leagues as SBR did – so successfully. Whickham, Adam, Sigurdsson, Gunter, Whittingham, Snodgrass, etc. etc.

Not the type of striker we need when we already have Carroll, Ameobi, Ranger and Best. If we had the money then yes but unfortunately we don’t. A fast skilful striker would be more useful to complement what we have already, and preferrably someone who will produce the goods right away instead of someone too young

5 mil for 17 year old sound much when were already cashstrapped and need a proven premierleague striker. But of course, Rafael Van der Vaart was only 17 when SBR tried to buy him from Ajax but FFS didnt give him that 5 mil it would cost to get him at that time.

Makes missing out on Moses for 2.5M even worse.

Couldn’t we offer 3m and Best for Whickham ?

Good player for 1 mill max …have seen him play not a future “world class” player as a matter as a fact not even a future player who scores 12 goals per season …we need a play maker no a striker we have too much of them we just relesed Ben Hag
