Newcastle Pursuing Reading’s Shane Long

News today that Newcastle United may be in a battle with Birmingham City to sign Shane Long from Reading.

Shane Long – very impressive for Reading this season

The news is in the News Of The World today, and it’s that both Premiership clubs are willing to cough up £3M for the Ireland striker, and that would be a very reasonable transfer fee.

Shane has two years left on his Reading contract, but the news (where they get this from we have no idea) are prepared to pay bigger wages than Newcastle, and as much as £5K a week more, or at least that’s what’s being reported.

Long is still only 23 years old, has scored nine goals in his last 22 games, and looks a very good player in the making, and certainly fits the profile of the type of player Chris Hughton would like to bring into the Tyneside club this summer.

However, if Birmingham do offer higher wages and Shane goes to Birmingham because of that – so be it.

Gone are the days Newcastle will pay huge wages to players who come to Newcastle just for the money, and we saw last season what a huge difference it makes when players come to Newcastle to play for the famous club in front of 52,000 Geordies.

There’s no doubt that Shane Long really played well during Reading’s great FA Cup run earlier in the year, and looked a class act against the Premier sides they met and beat – Burnley and Liverpool.

And the Newcastle manager Chris Hughton has been impressed with Long on the two occasions he played against Newcastle in the Championship season just finished, which Newcastle won by 9 points from 2nd placed WBA and by 23 points over 3rd placed Nottingham Forest.

Shane started his career at Cork City in 2005, and joined Reading back in 2005, and has played for Reading 141 times with 28 goals, and for his country Ireland, 10 times with 3 goals.

We’ll keep an eye on this one, but of course we have no idea if Newcastle are really interested in this player – after all it is Sunday today. 😀

No way. Nine goals in 22 matches isn’t nearly good enough. We need a proven classy striker! Not some talented ok championship player.

with all the strikers we have, we have 3 young ones, Carroll 21, Ranger 19 and Best 23, I really dont understand why we need another young strikers who has a poor goal scoring record?….who are they going to learn from?….he is definitely no better than what we have, all four of our strikers can easily score more goals than him….

if we really have no ambition or cant afford a proven goal scorer, at least we go for some relegated team goal scorers like Fletcher, Nugent or Dindane or even gamble on championship top goal scorers like Maynard or Hooper

we have Best already, we dont need another one

I really like shane long as a player, but we need more proven players, especially if we are not going to be signing many players i.e stephen hunt, s.ireland, luke young, would love to sign nathan delfonesco from villa, but no way they would sign him.

The noises coming out of the club seem to be saying that we will not be spending big. So if that is true, Long is probably the type of player we will be looking at. I wouldn’t think anyone really knows who we are after and we are going to have to put up with loads of this stuff. Wickham from ipswich would be good for the future but I don’t think he’s worth £4 mil plus best or that we could afford it.

Don’t you think its a bit early to judge best? Just look at zamora.

So how do the Brummies know what our wage structure is & we don’t?? I mean if they’re willing to pay £5k more a week than we are, does that mean they know how much we’re willing to pay for him???

Didn’t I read somewhere a while back that the Brummies may go to the bank Seymour Pierce if their owner, Carson Yeung doesn’t pay a £2m debt that he owes them & has been told to pay by the courts??? if thats the case, why would any player want to go to a club who’s owner does pay the bill.. lol

The voices also says we will bring quality. Long is not quality.

Stop mentioning Zamora btw. We could’ve done the same comparison with every striker who is shit.
Why did we sell Luque?? Look at Zamora
Why do we want so sell Xisco?? Look at Zamora.
Why did we release Pancrate?? Look at Zamora.
It’s silly really. It’s not like his goalscoring ratio is great either.

Robert Lewandowski is a talented player, but is set to go to seria A, juventus agreed a deal a while ago, i would prefer to sign players proven in the premiership, unless the players signed are free or for small fees i.e Juan Albin (free transfer)

I still really like Jay Bothroyd, and think he could be a good squad player for us, as he would cost a small fee, because cardiff are financially struggling

Read it again, I said “type” of player. I just think we will be buying in that price bracket. I also didn’t say I agreed. Polish lad looks good, but will be out of our reach.
    Newutd @ 10
So has best had a chance? Is he getting a lot of stick? Is it not possible that he will come good? Fair comparison with zamora in my humble opinion. I also don’t say I thought he was a good signing & I wouldn’t be supprised if he wasn’t quietly moved-on, but if he stays he needs our support.

Best has had plenty of chances, and he didn’t take any of them. He is ofcourse getting a lot of stick. He’s been utter shite! It’s possible, but remember – we’re now stepping up a noch to the PL. It will only get more difficult for him.

Quote – Sam Allardyce (who btw seems very bitter, and blames the fans for his misfortune at the club)
“What we needed was bigger and better players – like a Modric. Modric was in our training ground, having a look around. He was top of our list.”

What a player he would be for us.

Best,Ameobi are no PL strikers leaving us with half a strike force in Carroll and and an ageing Lovenkrands. Not the best way to start our PL season. We need 1 striker AT LEAST. We also need two full backs, and wide man and a creative midfielder. We cannot rely on a 17 year old in Vuckic to be our creative midfielder just yet. To much pressure on a young lad and he is still learning. Don’t get me wrong i want to see more of him next season but being a regular is to much for him atm in my opinion.

Can’t really remember him starting many games and due to the form of carrol & lovenkrands didn’t get a run.
Think he was bought as cover anyway & that if shola had been fit or harewood hadn’t broken his foot we wouldn’t have bought him which probably says it all. But CH appears a good judge of player so you never know. I do think we need a real premier class goalscorer.

If we are going to sign a little championship striker it has to be Nicky Maynard. He’s scored some absolute crackers including one against us and that’s the kind of ability that can make the step up.

At Reading, Sigurdsson got 20 goals from midfield and is only 20. He might be worth a bid.

i no shane long from home, ive played against him in soccer & gaelic football, he is a top top lad, very genuine, gives 100% and very talented, he’d certainly be better than his buddy best!! he could well surprise a few at a top club like us, however it is a big gamble, especially when we have a top youngster in ranger…i reckon we need a more established striker who can guarantee us goals

Riise wont be interested, we cant offer him his kind of wages.
Havent seen enough of Shane Long to comment really but he’s another young player who is untried and an unknown. To buy him would be taking a gamble, just like with Best, who, to be fair is actually the worst!
The only player i would like to see us bid for with regards to ‘untested at PL level’ would be Nicky Mynard. He’s go the whole package, pace, skill, good touch, scores goals (all be it at a lower level.)
Aside from Maynard we should look to bring in guarenteed quality.

we dont need another young unproven striker we need a top premier league forward to partner Carroll even if we need to blow a big chunk of our budget. I’d love to see Steven Fletcher who would cost around 4mill or Andy Johnson from Fulham although he may be a bit old and injury prone.

Some ppl are writing Shane of because of his scoring record… Well Bellamy scored 6 goals in 34 apps for Coventry back in 2000/2001 and then came here and helped us go from mid table to champions league… Point is that you cant write a player of just because he isnt top scorer, some times they offer something else to the team, like a threat from pace as in bellamy’s case.

Shane Long is currently on a hot streak, but as a Reading season ticket holder I’ve watched him fire blanks for 2 years. He works hard, and does contribute a lot, but he is far from a natural goal scorer, and misses too many chances. His close control is not great, and relies on his pace, which I think will be less effective in the Premier League.

Honestly I do not believe he is good enough for the Premier League or for Newcastle. He’s an OK Championship player, although if you’d aske a Reading fan 3 months ago, they wouldn’t even have said that……
