Are Newcastle Interested In Ajax Free Agent Urby Emanuelson?

We’ve been trolling through the free agents this summer, and one player that stands out is a young player Newcastle were said to be interested in a short 18 months ago.

Urby Emanuelson – Ajax left sided midfielder/defender

It’s true that a lot of free agents available this summer  are older players who are way past their best, players like Thierry Henry,  William Gallas, Michael Ballack, Deco, Robert Pires, Martin Petrov, Shaun Wright Phillips and others – who don’t fit the profile of players that Newcastle will be after.

That’s assuming Newcastle still want to sign younger  players, 26 year-old or younger  who can still improve.

We have already covered one young player who would fit in well at Newcastle – 23 year-old Joe Ledley of Cardiff City, and another young free agent  who could be a Newcastle target is is 23 year-old Urby Emanuelson of Ajax, who has played 11 times for Holland.

We were interested in this player ion December of 2008, when Joe Kinnear seemed to fancy the player and the news at that time was that Newcastle had been watching Urby  for over a year.

Urby Emanuelson was born 16th  June 1986 in Amsterdam, and plays as a left winger for his home-town team, and he can also play at left-back.

The 23 year-old turns 24 in June and was a member of the Dutch squad that won the UEFA U-21 Championship in the summer of 2006, when they beat England in a penalty shoot-out – that was when Newcastle’s Steven Taylor scored that penalty when he was injured.

In August of 2006 Urby, when only 19, made his debut for the Dutch national team in a friendly match against Ireland and he has so far played 191 times for Ajax with 19 goals and the Holland giants is the only club he has ever played for since joining them back in 1994 as an 8 year-old.

Urby has not been included in the Holland provisional squad for this summer’s World Cup, but if he indeed is a free agent, as we have been told, then he could be a good signing for the Tyneside club, and certainly comes at a good price at the very least.

Comments welcome.

I remember seeing this kid play a few years back. He looks a little lightweight, but his skills are beyond question. I would have him.

not a bad shout ed, had no idea he was out of contract…

dunno about your assessment of Kallstrom being past his best though, just because he has been usurped in the Lyon midfield by one of Europe’s brightest young talents (Pranjic – was linked to us once i’m sure) doesn’t mean he is past is best, any midfielder aged 27 with 13 goals in 72 internationals must be pretty handy…

This is the sort of player we need. Can cover both Jonas and Enrique too. And Krul can show him around Tyneside as well. Possibly a regular player for us and one with a future?

Aye, definitely the type of player we’ll be going after. Is perfect for the squad ’cause he is versatile, has european and international experience but as he is young will still have something to prove.

obviously this is just us getting carried away again cos we have no idea who newcastle are looking at but if he is indeed out of contract i think he would be a really good signing. He has pace, skill, can cover left back and left wing and he is young….kinda killing 2 birds with one stone as thats 2 positions we need cover/competition in.

how about this guy? we can get him for free and sign short contract about 1-2 yrs, with him, newcastle will get 20 extra goal and can bring us to european competition. i’m sure he is a quality player and if he will work well with jonas, i’m sure that it will be an exciting games to watch:)

Has this player been mentioned by the club lately or are you his agent Ed.. lol

The thing is, we can mention all the players we want to on this blog & all the others but only CH will know which players he’s after & I’m guessing from what happened in the Jan transfer window, we’ll not know until they’ve already signed, so I don’t see the point in saying this player & that player would be good in our team, as they’ll either get picked up by a bigger team or they’ll bot be CH radar…..

Don’t get me wrong, its nice to speculate but that’s all it is, speculation & in the end, disappointment when none of the players we speculate about end up coming to the TOON, instead, the Muckems outbid us with wages & we get screwed up by it.. 🙁

    @Solaidback

i see what your saying but to be fair the majority of ppl on here know that its all just speculation and basically it just gives us summit to talk about.

and to be fair it just gives us a chance to pretend we actually have an input in what the club does 🙂

no there is no chance that CH or any other manager reads this blog, i didnt mean that all i ment was that sometimes its nice to speculate about posible signings as long as they are half realistic and we know that it is just speculation. :-p

If we are going to sign a wide player on a free we shouldn’t look any further than Altintop from Bayern. Good player, only couldn’t get in the Bayern side because of the likes of Ribery and Robben.

sorry to dissapoint everyone but he has already stated in the past when spurs were interested he doesnt want to play in england, wants to play in spain, sevilla have been heavily linked. Imo he isnt that good anyways, very lightweight, probably more suited to spain been honest, i would much prefer steven hunt or seb larssen myself

Altintop??? he plays for a team that play champions league football, why would he sign for newcastle? great player, but no chance he would sign, i think even the likes of everton or villa would struggle to get him never mind newcastle

If Emanuelsson would consider us, I think he could be a perfect hit. His offense is really good and he is a very skillfull player. CH should definetely check up on him! Altintop would be great, but I honestly believe he is a step above us. Hoping for Urby!

As we would pay no money for a free transfer (obviously) the age or saleable value is irrelevant. I believe the club are of this stance as well, if the player is of the highest quality and doesnt command a fee or high wages, there is no reason to not approach them… thoughts?

It would be a terrific signing but cant really see it, It just goes to show how many talented players are available for nowt.

I get so sick of those sort of comments, Hughton has had terrific career as player and coach at the very highest level, World Cups, European Championships, FA Cup finals and UEFA Cup finals.

Of course he would know who he is, For a start he was Martin Jols assistant for nigh on 5 years.

Interesting to see that the blog owner and several readers on here are already slipping back to the “being deluded” stage with regards to incoming transfers. People like Urby Doodahson will not come to a club like Newcastle for peanuts and that is all the club will pay these days . Ashley has warned you, so why dont you listen?
Charlie Austin is as good as it will possibly get.

We don’t need him. We should finish 8th with the team we have so why upset the team balance and harmony with any new players. We are already overrun with quality midfielders and youngsters who never get a game. Stick with what we have and we will be OK..

Please don’t be so naive! We’re going up and our squad will need strengthening in certain areas. Even CH recognises this and thank god for that. Urby would be a very good signing. His performance hasn’t been the best during last season, even though he has shown that he still is a very exciting talent. I actually think this could be a possible signing but it all comes down to what kind of competition we have for the player. I think he is up for the challenge and as it was said earlier in the blog , he would provide brilliant cover and competition in places that need strengthening!

Urby would be more than an awesome signing. He is terrific. Looks like Ronaldinho on the field when he runs. Very creative player. Very skillful. Would be more than great singing. If he comes he will definitley play forward. Which is his back up position. Jonas and Enrique already cemented their spot. Hopefully this guy will replace Best and Ameobi.

Joe Cole and Altintop are way out of our league, both financially and skillwise. Urby might be a decent signing. But he would struggle to compete with Jose and Jonas I think.

To a large degree i have to agree with Hugh G Hampton, as soon as we got promoted alot of fans mentioned top half and europe, it aint going to happen, especially with no substantial funda, we have to look to survive anything else is a bonus after that, i laugh when people mention joe cole, altintop, Urby Emanuelson, it isnt going to happen, we are not the draw we once were, and the quicker the fans see this the better for the club, i have always said half the problem at newcastle are the fans expectation levels, a manager loses a few games and we call for their heads, stability is what is required, over several years with the same manager, with steady growth (i.e everton) make a couple of signings each window, and slowly build a together squad.

So there are quite a few handy players available for free, we have established.

I like Urby, seems like a Dutch Bale? Possibly abit light weight but can’t be worse at left back than Duff or N’Zogbia!

If funds are made available for signing on fees, houses and other such deal-sweeteners we should be able to get a handful of talented players to pad out our industrial squad.

@yuwing – I would sell my nan to get Henry in our new Puma kit!

Good shout, for once, and particularly when CH is evolving a playing style that is very ‘Dutch’. PvA fitted in well, and with Krul at the club I see no reason why players schooled in this ‘total football’ philosophy should not fit in perfectly on Tyneside.

Why wouldn’t he want to come, geordielad880? 52,000 crowds and top international players, we are a big club in all but achievements. About time we stopped punching below our weight, isn’t it?
