Are Newcastle Interested in Free Agent Shaun Wright-Phillips?

There is some news in the Guardian this morning that Newcastle may be interested in Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Shaun Wright-Phillips – Newcastle interested?

The 28 year-old Greenwich-born player would be a very popular addition to the Newcastle squad with Newcastle fans, there’s little doubt about that.

He is not unlike Wayne Routledge in his type of play and his enthusiasm, and we think if he did arrive on Tyneside, he would do very well indeed at Newcastle.

As we mentioned yesterday Shaun is a free agent this summer, and there’s some doubt about his future at Manchester City, a club he joined in 1998 and has now played over 250 games for with over 30 goals.

Shaun, who stands 5’5″ tall,  had a disastrous transfer to Chelsea in the summer of 2005 for £25M,  and he played 161 times at Chelsea with 18 goals, before returning to Manchester City two years ago.

There’s no doubt this lad is a good player and can play on either wing and therefore would be an excellent signing for the Newcastle United club.

The only doubt we have about Shaun is his age, as Chris has said this morning he is interested in players around 25 year-old or younger.

Chris will turn 29 in October, and age is the only doubt we have about this player, simply because Newcastle have stated they want to sign younger players.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Too old by CH’s recent statement. And also – the Guardian are not part of NUFC’s coaching structure!

    Could we afford his wages?
Must be on at least £10 and hour 🙂

I would like to see him join but I doubt we could afford his wages. He would doubt quality to our side and if he would accept a relatively short contract, 2-3 years he would be ideal, IF his wages are not too high. But he could also turn out as a Duff kind of signing for us.

Certainly wouldn’t mind it, tbh. Some very intelligent play goes through that lad… But can we afford his wages?

Good player, and age shouldn’t be a concern here.
MA’s main concern about age is the re-sell value and you don’t lose a penuts except wages when signing free agent.

Howay Ed, enough with the “Are Newcastle Interested in Fred Bloggs?” postings…until such time as they have any real substance!

might be interesting if he misses out on the World Cup 23, because then he might look for a club to play guaranteed first team football at, with that being of bigger concern that wages or european football.

A few years back I would have ran through walls to se SWP in a toon top. Now, I have to say, his attitude seems far too mercinary for me. I reckon what others have said about the age thing sounds about right too, over 26… next.

well, could be he’s turned down city’s offer as he doesn’t wan to be stuck on the bench again.

after all, that’s why he went back to city from chelsea, to get football.

who knows, money seems to follow this lad about, maybe if we sign him we’ll get our own arab come along in 6 months and buy the club off ashley lol 😉

Hmmm, not sure we’ll get him, his wages will be a problem!

He’ll be a trophy signing (like Bullard was for Hull) for one of the bottom 10 teams from this year. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him going to Sunderland or the Brum!

Not sure how 161 appearances for Chelsea in 3 years can be classed as a disaster.
I would definitely take him tho. But paper talk is pointless, builds up hopes and how often do they get it right?

Will be looking for one last big contract & if its true he has turned down £70k per week to stay at a club who will probably be in the top 4, why on earth would he come to us? Would we really want to spend such a large amount of money on signing-on fee’s & wages for one player, he’s a good player but a luxary I don’t think we can afford at the moment. I’d rather have Robbie Keane if we have cash to burn.

If he signed a 3 year deal for us on 35k per week plus relegation wage drop clause I’d be delighted. However I feel there’s more chance of hearing the question “Leg or Wing” when ordering a bacon sandwich.

SWP signed a 4 year deal when he re joined Manchester City in 2008. His deal expires in 2012.

I’m amazed he played so many games for Chelsea! Sure it wasn’t more like 61?

Good player but you could get 3 bodies in for his wage demands (I would imagine)

    Is it Sunday already!!!

What a stupid crap-loid post, yes he’s an ok player & would do wonder for us but 1) He’s too old, 2) He’s way out of our wage range, 3) Would he want to come to us as we’re not a top team anymore….

So forget it lads, its a windup by the crap-loids again….
