The play-off final for the 3rd promotion place in the CC Championship takes place at Wembley this afternoon in a 3:00 pm kick off, between Cardiff City and Blackpool.
There is some interest in this game from Newcastle fans, because if Blackpool win then it could be that Cardiff’s 23 year-old midfielder Joe Ledley, will move away from his home-town club.
And he’s available on a free transfer this summer, and since the Newcastle manager Chris Hughton has not yet said the Tyneside club are not interested in this player, it’s just possible he’s a Newcastle target.
Chris has already said that he’s not interested in players like Shawn Wright Phillips and Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere on loan, and that’s probably our best guide as to at least who Newcastle are not after.
Joe would be a great signing for Newcastle, so in a way we will probably be pulling for Blackpool this afternoon. Joe has played an impressive 248 games for his home-town club with 28 goals, and looks an excellent player.
And it will certainly be a great celebration for whichever club makes it through this afternoon, but they will immediately become odds-on favorites for relegation from the Premiership next season.
Burnley got 3rd place last season when they beat Sheffield United 1-0 at Wembley, and were subsequently relegated, and it appears that whichever club wins this afternoon will need to significantly improve their squad over the summer.
Cardiff finished in 4th position in the Championship on 76 points, 26 points behind Newcastle, and beat 5th placed Leicester City in a penalty shoot-out, following extra time in the second tie.
Blackpool finished in 6th position on 70 points, a full 32 points behind Newcastle, and rather surprisingly beat 3rd placed Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals.
It should be another great game this afternoon, that’s for sure, and of course the emotion is sometimes unbearable for the fans. But the winners will be able to welcome teams like Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool – and whoops we almost forgot – the great Newcastle United too. 😀
