Newcastle Retain Football Friends Trophy – Airey Wins Top Award

The talented Newcastle United Under-18s retained the Football Friends title last night in Bosnia

Phil Airey – player of the tournament

The youngsters also won the same trophy last year, and last night they retained the title when they beat NK Zagreb 3-2 in a terrific final in the Bosnian town of Foca.

The youngsters reached the final by hammering FK Sarajevo 6-0, followed by 3-2 victory over Red Star Belgrade in the semi-final.

Last year Haris Vuckic was named the player of the tournament, and would you believe a Newcastle player won the trophy again thios year?

This time it was impressive Amble-born striker Phil Airey, who will be part of the first team squad next season at Newcastle.

Newcastle went ahead in the final when local striker Dan Taylor headed home a Paul Dummett cross after just ten minutes of the game, but then Zagreb equalized.

Newcastle then scored two goals from Phil Airey in quick succession with just ten minutes to go, but NK Zagreb pulled one back from the penalty spot with just four minutes remaining.

Newcastle held on to win the tournament again, and this win reflects so well on Newcastle’s new Youth Policy.

We have to expect two or three of these players to eventually come through the ranks at Newcastle to be first team players in the future, and save the club millions.

Congratulations to these lads. Well done. Hope this proves my point about young loanees. Do we need them when we have our own youngsters to come through. Surely all CH needs to do is get some quality freebies in alongside some twentysomething bargain basement geniuses?
