News today in the Sun, that Preston North End manager Darren Ferguson may be interested in Nicky Butt.
Nicky Butt – as Newcastle captain
The Newcastle United midfielder’s contract will not be renewed at the end of June, and Nicky will become a free agent, if indeed he wants to remain playing football at 35 – he’ll be 36 in January.
But the report this morning suggests that Butt could be offered the chance to extend his playing career by Preston manager and former Manchester United team-mate Darren Ferguson.
If this story is true, it may be too good for Nicky to refuse, because with all his vast experience, both on and off the field, he could be a top acquisition for a team looking to get promoted from the Championship next season.
Nicky would do it for the challenge, so if he’s offered the chance, we’re not sure that wages would be a problem for a down-to-earth and honest character like Nicky Butt.
We’ll have to wait and see what develops here, but it would be good for Nicky to have one last hurrah next season, after almost completing a fantastic career at Manchester United and Newcastle United – and he played 39 times for England.
Nicky has so far played 566 first class club games with 32 goals for the two United’s, and it could be that he’s not finished yet.
