Newcastle’s Reported Interest In Swedish International Defender

According to the Daily Telegraph today, there are several clubs interested in Swedish defender Andreas Granqvist, including Newcastle United.

Andreas Granqvist – Newcastle interested?

Andrea currently plays for Dutch club FC Groningen, and he was at Wigan Athletic from 2007 until 2008, but only appeared   14 times for Wigan, and it looked like he couldn’t get his first team place at that time at the Lancashire club.

The 25 year-old is 6′ 3″ tall and played 26 times for the Swedish U21 side, but has only appeared 5 times for the full Swedish side.

Fulham are also quoted as possibly being interested in the player along with Wolfsburg, Schalke 04, HSV and of course Newcastle.

In January of 2007 he went on loan to Wigan and then a few months later signed a permanent deal two year deal at the club.

But he played less than a season with Wigan Athletic before moving to Swedish club Helsingborg on loan, and then signing on permanently in 2008 for FC Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie –  Groningen finished 8th in the Dutch league last season.

So his track record doesn’t seem to be too startling, and we have to wonder if this player is good enough for Newcastle United, if indeed this news report is true – which seems unlikely – at best.

Ed, do you think you could do a running tally of all the players NUFC is linked with this Summer? I’d guess the number will be well 200!

nufc fans have never heard of him and they will probably never here his name again…i actually know him..by his nick name “the defender from hell” from his days in Helsingborg ….he will be a great for our structured defense
Simpson..who was unwanted by (Blackburn, Wolves, and Hull)..and ended up here cause our genus manager believes he is classy
    Colo..??
Williamson…not even close to epl standard
Jose..no offense but he was one of the players who got us relegated and i really doubt his performance in the epl
    Taylor…???
and now Granqvist…i am way way way better than him and ya if he comes lets give him the new nick name “bomsong”
which leaves our defense with only 2 epl standard players Colo and Taylor

Honestly, I don’t think this swede is the answer either. But there is a another swede available that would be a very interesting buy. Norwegian Rosenborg (yeah the same club as Per Ciljan Skjelbred plays in) owns the back Mikael Lustig. He has taken big steps and is a very modern back at the age of 24. offensive, fast and also very smart. I think he would cost 2 mill and he would provide very good quality.

    Read this crap:

“Onuoha WILL sign for Newcastle United within the next 2 weeks the fee will be around £4.5million maybe £5million and will rise to £5.5million with add ons in his contract such as apperences England call up if it happens plus a 5% sell on clause.

Also Boyd has passed a medical and will sign a 3 year deal will be announced in the next 7 days his family lives close by to Newcastle as well so this is the perfect move for him.

And finally David Wheater heavily rumoured in recent days will complete a £4million move he has already taken and passed a medical and is now discussing contract talks the deal is 99% done.

And Mulumbu has also been shown around SJP and is expected to sign a 4 year deal. these 4 will happen .

Newcastle fans be patient something will happen in the next few days.

    Thank you for reading
my source – I work at SJP. my job involves faxing the paperwork to other clubs this is how I know these deals are concrete.”

Crap indeed Craigg, I completely agree!

Does the author really expect us to believe that someone who had the job of faxing *hugely confidential* transfer paperwork around would be so collossally stupid as to put all this information on a website?

Unless his name’s Derek, of course …

At the bottom it said Harry Redknapp could offload Hutton and Kyle Naughton. I would be more than happy if we get Kyle Naughton, has great speed, plays right back, but according to Middlesboro he can play anywhere in the defence including the center.

Didn’t you guys know? Not only do Newcastle have about 6 million groundsman (or a lot of very popular groundsmen) a fax man who they can’t trust, and a secret source running 24-7, they also have a fantastic owner!

    Oh, that sarcasm was painful..

Henok @ 2, we all bowe to your superior football knowledge it seems that not only are you something of coach but your now also quite a handy player. Now one last time for the hard of thinking, most supporters are fully aware of the shortcomings of our manager & certain players & don’t need you to explain it to us again & again with the same tired comments. We are not going to get the new bigname manager you craive or £20 mil to spend on players, to have any chance of staying up we have got to give the manager & team our support. Fair enough you might know the player we are linked with but why yet another dig at chris & players?

Well said noir9. I’m getting tired of the doom and gloomers spouting their negativity where it’s unwarranted.

A lot of our team have a lot to prove in the EPL and yes, some of them helped us into the second tier but to blame it entirely on the players and Chris (those who helped us BACK INTO the EPL) is ridiculous. We were on a downward spiral long before the relegation squad pulled on a toon top and the sooner some of you realise and embrace that fact the better.
