Jose Enrique has talked today about his partnership with Argentine Jonas Gutierrez on the lefty wing at Newcastle United.
Jonas Gutierrez – great partnership with Gutierrez
Jose talked about his burgeoning partnership with Jonas:
“We have a very good understanding on and off the pitch,” “We played in the same league in Spain.”
“I know I have been good defending this year but when I used to play in Spain I was better attacking, better going forward.”
“When I first came to England I knew I needed to defend more, so I did that. But playing with Jonás last season I had the opportunity to go forward more and to attack.”
“I have learned to defend in England because I know you need to do that more. But I am only 24, I have a lot still to learn and hopefully I can continue to do that with Newcastle United.”
Last season was easily Enrique’s best since Sam Allardyce brought him to Tyneside in the summer of 2007, and most Newcastle fans are hoping for big things from the Spanish U21 International next season.
And it’s interesting that with Jonas Gutierrez now likely to play right back for his country – at least in the group stages of the World Cup in South Africa this summer – we wonder if Chris Hughton would even consider playing the 26 year-old in that position for Newcastle?
There’s no way he will do that of course, because Jonas’ considerable skill on the ball is much better used up front to both create and score goals.
