Newcastle Reported To Be After Swansea’s Ashley Williams

News today in GOAL that Newcastle are after Swansea defender Ashley Williams.

Ashley Williams – Newcastle interested?

The first thing that comes to mind is that if Newcastle sign the player – which is extremely unlikely – we’ll have a Williamson and a Williams in the back  four for the Magpies – talk about confusion.

That would be even more true if Steven and Ryan Taylor are also playing the back four. 😀

And the report is saying Newcastle could be interested in Williams only as a  possible replacement for Steven Taylor – in case the 24year-old local lad is sold by the Magpies this summer – which we think is extremely doubtful.

But Williams is a good player and was Swansea’s Player Of The Season and he was also named in the PFA Championship team of the Season. Ashley was named in central defense alongside Newcastle’s great Fabricio Coloccini. Ashley can also play at right back.

The 25 year-old Wolverhampton-born Welsh International  center-back (20 caps), has so far played 97 times for the Welsh club with 6 goals. The lad stands 6 foot tall.

But if Newcastle have no transfer money to spend we suppose this is another dud story.

And it turns out the powerful Welsh International has played down suggestions linking him with a switch to a Premier League club this summer.

But since there is some confusion right now at Swansea City, with manager Paulo Sousa yet to sign a new deal with the Welsh club, the report suggests Newcastle may be able to take advantage of this.

Williams began his career at WBA but was released at 16 and joined  Hednesford Town in Stafforshire in 2001, and played there 34 times before moving to Stockport County in 2003.

Ashley played 174 times with two goals for the Stockport club before moving to Swansea in March of  2008,  for an undisclosed fee thought  to be around £400K.

But if Newcastle have no money available to spend this summer, it’s hardly likely that this – or most other transfer stories over the summer that will cost  real money- will be true.

Oh dear.

Newcastle United’s Shola Ameobi could be Simon grayson’s next big signing after appointing young Kasper Schmeichel on Friday. Shola helped Newcastle to promotion with 11 goals in 21 games.

Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll would also boost Leeds Uniteds team probably, almost securing a Premiership spot for the 2011/2012 season.

    From the ever reiliable Transfer,

I wouldnt mind a couple of pints of what this guys drinking!

Ashley williams is a hell of a player. He would be a fantastic signing. Not overly bothered if S. Taylor stays or goes.

very googd player i agree not bothered if taylor leaves i never see him saying he wants to stay, before start sayin the club hav confirmed that there will be no cash signings they havent the press hav said they hav but in the statement the club released they said they would only make comment on by offical statement and they also said they would not communicate with the media, still think there will b signings if there cash, free agents or loans who knows non of us thats for sure, but i think there will b at least 4 players coming in a striker, 2 defenders and a midfielder, i personnally hope we try n get kris boyd u cant ignore a free agent with that goal scoring record even if it is in scotland, wilshere on loan would be great signings i think the sqaud is good enough to finish any were between 11th and 17th but i dont think the sqaud is big enough n hopefully airey, adjei, inman, folan and vukic all take there chance to step up to first team there certainly good from the games ive watched them play

I am surprised you have not put a thread up about Sulemen Sarajlic the 15 year old 6ft 4 Swedish goalkeeper agreeing a provisional move to NUFC.

Williams = Not good enough, no better than what we have. If we sell Taylor then buying this muppet would be a step down in my view.

How many teams get promoted and weaken their teams? Get out of our club you fat barsteward!

HAs any club made any significant signings yet this Summer. or has every story just been a rumor or agents wishlist of moves?

Toon1978, wasn’t that the kid Ed did a feature on about 3 weeks back? Can’t be bothered to go through the old threads like but there was some scandanavian kid mentioned who lives at the top of a beanstalk with a magic chicken or something?

From the rumours that were going around at the end of last season we were in for him on the last week of last season.

Anyway i would like a defensive right back for next season as we are not going to have the luxury of simpson having time to bomb forward. Williams could do that probably and us and Swansea had the best defensives record i think, so combine the two 😀 and got one hell of a defence.

Henok @ 8,I’ve never seen callum morris play or read very much about him & I don’t pretend to be a great judge of player unlike some. So what makes you think that morris was good enough & shouldn’t have been released? How many times did you see him play? In short what did you see that the toon didn’t?

Williams signed a new contract on Friday. Good player, and will probably improve, but Swansea won’t be giving him away, so thats puts us out of the reckoning.
