If Newcastle are to have a decent season next season, then there are seven of our younger players who will need to improve and become Premiership-class players.
Here are the seven players and they are all 26 year-old or younger – just like the players Chris Hughton hopes to recruit this summer.
Danny Simpson 23
Danny has played very well for Newcastle since he was signed back in August as a loan player from Manchester United.
But he still needs to show that he can make it in the Premiership and we expect Chris Hughton to bring in some competition for Danny this summer, and that will help him find his best form.
Next season will be a crucial season for the 23 year-old Salford-born player who now has 122 first-class games under his belt with two goals – one for the Magpies.
Tamas Kadar 20
A very good looking 20 year old defender, the Hungarian has always looked solid in the Newcastle first team, either at center-back or left-back. What Tamas needs now is more games and he’ll have to get those at Newcastle.
That’s unless Chris Hughton brings in another center-back – maybe even Fitz Hall – and then the Newcastle manager may look to send Tamas out on loan to a Championship club, for an extended run as a first team player.
But we think so highly of this lad that we think he will be competing for a first team position form the very start of next season.
Mike Williamson 26
From what we’ve seen of Mike this year we’ve liked a lot.
The former Portsmouth and Watford player has put in some very solid performances at the back for Newcastle and we’ll have to hope he can make the big step up in class and continue his excellent play for the Magpies in the Premiership.
Mike has always wanted to play in England’s top division and he gets his chance at Newcastle, a club he has often waxed lyrical about during his short stay oin Tyneside.
We like Mike a lot and he must stand a good chance of boeing able to make the step up – and then how much will he be worth? A lot more than the measly £1M Newcastle paid Portsmouth for him, that’s for sure.
Danny Guthrie 23
Danny has often looked the part on Tyenside, and played very well for the Newcastle side this year. He has already played in the Premiership for Newcastle and next season will be an important season for the central midfielder to become a starter at the club.
Guthrie will still have some competition at Newcastle with Smith, Nolan and Barton all currently ahead of him at the Tyneside club, but Danny is a good player and could well come into his own next year.
Wayne Routledge 25
Wayne has looked terrific since he arrived in January and the 25 year-old is looking forward to next season, where he could again become a top player.
He has already had a few chances in the past to grow to being a Premiership class player, but the youngster seems a lot more mature now and Newcastle fans have seen the lad still has some incredible skills.
If Wayne can provide the ammunition down the right wing, as Jonas Gutierrez will do down the left, then out strikers could score some goals next season.
Leon Best 23
Of all the players we have reviewed in this article our biggest doubts surround 23 year-old Leon Best, and whether he can become a Premiership class player.
Leon struggled to maintain his first team position since January, and he ended the season 4th choice striker at best (excuse the pun), behind Carroll, Lovenkrands and Ameobi. And some would say 19 year-old Nile Ranger would also be ahead of him.
But Nile will be sent out on loan next season, so Leon will have to fight it out with the remaining three strikers plus another striker Chris Hughton will undoubtedly bring in during the summer.
We’d love for this lad to succeed but we do have some serious doubts – but the lad also needs some time to to find his game on Tyneside.
Andy Carroll 21
Andy had had a terrific season since the turn of the year and scored the vast majority of his 19 goals this year.
He has been hailed as a future England number 9, and the 21 year-old will probably get that famous Newcastle shirt for next season, and we are hoping for great things from the Gateshead-born striker.
While Andy will find things a lot tougher against Premiership class defenders, his work in the air is terrific and if he can improve his game on the ground, as manager Chris Hugthon wants to see.
Andy could become a revelation next season in the Premier League – we hope so anyway.
Comments welcome.

Comment #81Barton can still be a decent box-to-box midfielder. He has to keep his attitude from this season though and he should work on fitness, passing et cetera

Comment #82we need someone to make runs past carroll , just dont see anyone on the books that can do that job or who it comes natural to , i hope barton comes good as he owes us big time , if the wingers are playing well you dont realise as much but if they get snuffed out or arent getting into the game then it just goes long

Comment #85we need a benayoun type player really, makes intelligent runs, scores goals, and makes assists, and moves draws centre halves around, creating space for other players, beardsley was one of the best players i have ever seen at dragging defenders out of position with his movement, and creating space for the strikers and other advancing midfielders

Comment #86I like Barton. and I can’t see why Onouha would even have a problem with him. I think the press are looking at every loop hole they can to create a bad story about newcastle you would think they had better things to do.! I don’t think Steven taylor will leave their was something on SSN which said he had said he wants to stay and wasn’t going no where and Hughton confirmed it thats the link I put up before. Carroll obviously wont be leaving as he will proberly get the number 9 shirt. I would rather see him prove himself in the prem first though. Ash Williams is a realistic target at say around £2million. and have onuoha at RB as I think we’ll get him. Sunderland seem to be going after every player Newcastle are linked with.. mind you they need direction dont they after all their manager is a geordie!. if we can get £4million for Nolan I would happily sell. and bring in Mulumbu for say 2million and ash williams. 2million. I am fairly confident we have 8-10million to spend aswell.. although another rumour my m8 just told me is C.Hughton has quit LOL.. probs another press special ! talking rubbish again

Harper
Onouha/Simpson Taylor Colo Enrique
Guthire/routledge Barton Smith/vuckic Jonas
Lovenkrands carroll
Onouha is a potential new signing..I am not sure by williamson with no prem experience.. routledge is the same hes not been up to it in the prem before. I would like us to sign Onouha for cen back or right back if so then get Ash Williams for cen back.. or ebondo for right back and have onouha so their is a few options for defence. midfield I would get mulumbu. or poulsen. and whilshire or mcgeedy.. up front .. vela on loan and take a risk on boyd . sell xisco and best. try and get hooper in a deal with best.. and try and get readings right winger in a deal involveing ryan taylor.

Comment #93Ebondo is very average, mulumbu is no better than what we have and poulsen always causes trouble, and has been known as having a terrible attitude. onouha, ashley williams i definately agree with 100%, and would love to see sigurdsson sign aswell

Comment #97“I definitely want to stay,” said Taylor. “I was part of the side that got us relegated, and I want to be part of the side that helps us get our Premier League place back. It’s as simple that.”
and
“the squad we have is good enough to take us to the Premier League. We’ll then see what happens.”
Come on try again, nothing there (note* there)
refering to this coming season and now is the time to “see what happens” , in the words of S Taylor.

Comment #99Geordielad. we almost signed ebondo for 3million a few years ago but they upped the offer to 4million then to 6.5 so we pulled out. If it is true what hughton has said about him wanting to sign talented championship players then I think Ash Williams would be very near the top of his list. as when he played against us he had a cracking game. this is my team with the players I would get..
Harps. although in 1 year forster
Onouha A.Williams S.Taylor Enrique
Sidgurdson/whittingham Guthire nolan/barton jonas
Carroll Bellamy/vela

Comment #101Talking of players that played well against us, what about Miles Addison?
He was quality when he played against us, he’s young, wouldn’t cost too much and has a lot of potential (like Bramble used to have).

Comment #102yeah newcastle did try and sign him in the past, but that doesnt make him a good player, and doesnt mean we should sign him now. The same time i seen ozil when he played for germany under 21’s about 18 months ago, another player andreas beck, looked an outstanding talent at right back, brilliant going forward and also defensively, very assured on the ball, in the 4-5 matches i have seen him since then i have yet to see him make a mistake, and now has broken into the german senior side

Comment #103geordielad880 @ 66. I don’t think Staylor is overated at all, I do however believe there are times that we need to tie his arms to his sides? Given his reflex handling he might make a decent ‘rush keeper’ should the FA change the rules.

Comment #105I honestly believe taylor will stay and sign a new contract after the world cup. we’ve gone up. like we wanted us to. we’ve kept our players like he hoped. and when I watched us celebrate the title against Ipswich that didn’t look like a player who was about to quit and leave.. he even celebrated with carroll so that showed their is no ill feeling between the 2 and he said after that match he wanted to stay when he was interviewed in the dressing room. I honestly think he’ll stay. hes a geordie loves the club and I remember him saying Newcastle is all he knows he couldn’t possiblely imagin himself putting another shirt apart from a Newcastle one on. hes been linked for 3 years now surely you know the drill! he’ll get linked but nothing will happen and if he does go which I would be very shocked by.. we’d get at least 8-9million and could sign Williams and Onuoha with 5 or 6 of it and have some left to get a midfielder. but if hughton has anything to do with it he wont be leaving

Comment #106Right, am cream crackered, so I’m gonna go and get my fat one down. For what it’s worth jay, mocking asside, I hope at least some of your predictions are correct, but given the evidence you have posted, I still think you tell too many inconsistent lies. I still reckon we can well do without Boyd and McGeady though. As usual, happy to be proved wrong, but I don’t see it happening in your case.

Comment #109GeordieLad880 – I’ve been saying that for aeons. We are screaming out for a no. 10 support striker in the beardsley/benayoun mould who is mobile, deft, canny and creative around the box. We can alternate Carroll, shola, best in that order for all I care, but the priority is to get someone to play in the hole.
Sigurdsson/ Park Chu Young/ Tovoinen/ Whittingham

Comment #110I would want at least 6million for taylor . but if he signed a new deal he’d be worth 9million. but even that 6million could get us Williams ( who am a big fan off ) and Onouha. Newcastle get bullied alot we need someone strong and Onouha is strong and could get up and down that wing. G. I hope am right aswell although like I said if my friend is right then I am if hes wrong then I am!. their isn’t many strikers out their who we can get for 3-4million so taking a chance on boyd I would take as we could always sell him for 2-3million and we’ve then made a re sale profit if he flops! but we’ve got 4million coming from the milner sale. the final installment of his transfer. and Spurs wouldn’t of paid 8million up front so we should have money from that. also a bit from the duff transfer maybe?.. so we should have at least 6-7million.! anyways night lads!.

Holidays closer to being over for Chris Hughton. So he is coming back. And hopefully the signings that you are saying are now here. Kris Boyd, Nedium Onuoha, and doubtful David Wheater. And the loan signings either Ireland, Wilshere, Cleverly, or Mcgeedy.

Comment #114Hughton is already back from his holidays he got back yesterday. and Mcgeedy if he comes it wont be on loan it will be for around 4million.. as for the no.9 shirt we all know Carroll will get it.. its not official but the way Hughton talks about him it seems that way. I hope we sign sigurdsson next season if we stay up and they stay down!. I’d sign Onouha, Ash Williams, Whittingham, Whilshire ( loan ) vela ( loan ) I prefer him to welbeck. I’d take a chance on boyd as hes free… if he flops then sell him.. and I’d sign a CM. Newcastles mistake was selling Milner. we should of kept hold of him but that idiot Ashley let him go.. all that time we needed a decent left winger we finally got one in Gutierrez then we sell our right winger.. so we’re back to square one and now need a proven prem right winger.. Newcastle have sold some very good players in the past.. we have CM probs we wouldn’t be having them if we kept Parker.. we need to stop being a sellin club.. we anit wigan we don’t produce top quality players just for other clubs to come in and take them off us.. we’re Newcastle and if we keep hold of Taylor and reject all bids and get him to sign then I think that could be a great thing for the club. I also think he’ll stay as part of the statement says ” We want more homegrown players at the club ” well Taylor is a geordie hes homegrown so why would we sell him.. forget the bust up.. give him a 5 year contract.. hes a good defender and can improve.. he just needs to stop thinking hes the goalkeeper at times !

Comment #117richietoon, I said I was kitting up. Didn’t say I was there. We knew it was going to happen and we went on readiness in Oct 1989. Sadam didn’t actually invade until about a year later. Most of our assets were already in Suadi by then, appart from the desert camoflauge kit, which ironically we had sold to Sadam a decade earlier!
