Do Newcastle Have Any Interest In Liam Lawrence?

There was news yesterday, that we initially ignored, which said that Newcastle may be interested in former Sunderland winger Liam Lawrence.

Liam Lawrence – are Newcastle interested?

Celtic had been favored to sign the Stoke City and former Sunderland player, but at 28 he could be too old for Newcastle.

Liam had difficulty getting a game at Stoke last season, and it’s in his best interests to move on from the Potters, which is what he will do this summer.

Liam joined Stoke from Sunderland in 2007, for £500K, after completing a loan spell at the Stoke club.

He played 80 times for Sunderland, with 9 goals and had started his career at Mansfield Town. He has played 124 times for Stoke with 24 goals since 2007,  and generally plays on the right wing.

Liam has played 4 times for Ireland, but with him turning 29 in December we’d be surprised is Chris Hughton was interested in this player.

The story making the rounds is that the Newcastle club have made an 11th hour attempt to get the player – but we doubt the story has any truth in it.

Of course, we could also be wrong on that.

Isn’t it amazing though that you can only assign 25 shirts next season but the papers seem to think we are gonna need about 125 new shirts, the amount of players they link with each club is just laughable :O

you can assign as many shirts as you want but yeah it is stupid,

why would we want him? if were going to sign a player that isnt going to go straight into the first team then they have to be young and able to improve and he isnt that

MarkO I thought they were changing the rules next/this season towards squads. Aren’t you only allowed to choose 25 players who can play in the season, apart from under 21’s?

no idea, im sure he will show up when 1 of his wish-list actually signs up. We all know 1 or maybe 2 will actually sign coz anyone could right 6 names every transfer window and get 1 right eventually lol

I think it’s safe to say this is BS because, although I’m not certain I think I may have started this rumour the other day when I said we should have a look at him. Word spreads fast, huh

Yes, can only assign 25 shirts for player over 21. Any players over the age of 21 not registered will not be able to play competitive games. So many of those players have to be home grown too i think (trained at any club in england between ages of 16-21 or something like that)

I very much doubt there’s the slightest truth in this story, but I think you are wrong about LL. He’s a good winger who has been very good for Ireland recently – which means he’s good enough for Trappatoni. He crosses a helluva lot better than Gutierrez but otherwise gallops up and down the flank like him (Without all the falling over).
