Will Newcastle Sign Any Free Agents This Summer?

We’ve been a little concerned about some of Chris Hughton’s statements of late.

Colin Calderwood and Chris Hughton at Newcastle

The comments suggest that Newcastle will not sign any player until after the World Cup ends on July 11th, but surely if  Newcastle are to sign free agents, that has to be done before the end of  June.

The contracts of players usually go from July 1st through June 30th so the contracts of free agents will generally end on June 30th.

And of course their agents will be in action this month in trying to set up new  deals for their players, so Newcastle have to be in action right now with success coming before the end June – if indeed we are to sign some free agents.

We know Chris has a number of loan signings in his sights, and it’s fitting that those will not take place until early August at the earliest,  with clubs usually not deciding which players will go out on loan until well into the pre-season.

And there still seems confusion about whether transfer money is available,  and of course transfers can happen at any time, with those players already having contracts at other clubs, so there’s no rush to beat the June 30th deadline.

But if  Newcastle are to sign some free agents this summer then surely they have to be accomplished before the end of June.

What do you think?

No signings. The words are from CH – we have a squad good enough. And without money we will make do with the coaches we have too. None in means none out. The Jello Man from Bucks has spoken!

Ericles @ 3, just wondering where you read that CH said “no signings” I read his comments in the journal today about have experienced premiership players already in the squad & Ed has voiced his concerns about CH saying there will probably be no signings until after the WC but I can’t see anything about there being no signings wether there bought, free or borrowed.

Noir9 – just a gut feeling but I really do hope I am wrong! In agreement with Ed’s misgivings about before the end of June.

eizel @ 5, if you really think that we would sign Joe Cole then you’re off your rocker. 1. we don’t have the finances to get him even though he’s a free agent-his wages would be far too high and 2. there is no way he would want to come to us. Keep dreaming. I think we may pick up one or two bosman players as well as two or three loan signings.

Ericles @ 8, cheers I thought I had missed it. Hey my own gut feeling is that we will sign a couple but god knows. The sad thing is that it would be so easy for the the club to clarify there plans, nothing concrete just “there’s a limited amount of money available” or it’s free’s, it’s loans etc…..throw us a friggin bone for gods sake.
Not sure about the end of june thing either!? Perhaps his bosman targets are involved in the WC or are already signed…….ah thats what it is joe cole’s signing is going to be announced at the new kit launch after the WC, silly me its so obvious. I’m amazed jay89 didn’t know about it!

We missed Ibanez, 20 odd caps for spain who is a West Brom.

Pogatetz is experienced defender who is pretty decent and hes gone to germany on a free.

Two decent defenders we didnt snap up have moved on.

Cant really see many players we could get on a free thats gona set the world alight.

Need the Xisco money to buy players im guessin.

I’m still hoping this is all a cunning plan to badly upset Louise Taylor and Ashole will throw open his chequebook to sign Torres from under Steve Bruce’s nose……..
