As if to verify there’s very little happening right now at the Newcastle club, the Journal today just rehashes three or four stores of yesterday, which are already old news.
Chris Hughton – not much happening
However Chris Hughton does give a short interview which is new and this is what Chris said today:
” We’re just using the first few weeks of the summer to decide what we’re going to do,”
“It’s an ongoing process. We have time to make these decisions, they don’t have to be made in the first few weeks.”
“We’re just on the back of a very good season where we’ve won promotion and it’s now time to sit back and evaluate.”
If Chris is going after any free agents like Kris Boyd and Joe Ledley for example, the Magpies will need to get their act together quickly, since the contracts of the free agents will terminate at their current clubs at the end of the month, and negotiations will be going on right now between their agents and various interested clubs.
So in that case Chris cannot wait too long on his targets.
But it could well be that most of the reinforcements this summer will be with loan signings, since it’s true in that case that you cannot do too much with these deals until August – other than decide who you want to go after.
Chris saying that there’s not much going to happen in the next few weeks seems to point to loan moves for players like Jack Wilshere, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck and possibly others – as the way to strengthen the squad for next season.
But it seems to be very slow as far as new news on Newcastle right now – with the main emphasis in the football news seemingly on the World Cup in South Africa, which kicks off in just 6 days time.
Comments welcome.

Comment #6Geordielad 880 – I look at it as us having 3 in the target man role and only one (loven) in the mobile – supporting spot. That’s the position I’d like to see us add to with a new face.. young, technical, pace, deft touch and an eye for goal.

Comment #7Geordieland just as a matter of interest how r u getting “we have no money, therefore cannot sign anyone” from Ch saying “ We’re just using the first few weeks of the summer to decide what we’re going to do,”

To me it sounds like Chris is taking his time in picking the players we are going to try and sign not that we have no money , could be wrong like….

Comment #8I also agree we need a left footed utility player, another defender and ideally another proven goal scorer – maybe on a free (Boyd).

Comment #9Our squad is in relatively good shape, and whilst you have to be bold to get in there for players like Moses you don’t want another Best scenario either.
A move for a couple of proven players on a free e.g. Boyd/Pederson. Followed by an investment in a couple of young promising, pacey bucks- sigurdsson, Park chu young, Wickham etc.

Comment #10johno toon im getting it from all the statements that have been released not just that one, its just basically setting us up for not signing anyone unless they are free, on loan, or we sell players.
And boater i agree we need to have someone other than lovo that has pace, movement etc, like a delfonesco or sturridge type player

Comment #11it makes no sense in my opinion waiting until late june and july like hughton has stated, you want to give the new signings asmuch time as possible to get used to the area, team-mates, all signings should be there for the duration of pre-season, i think newcastle are gonna wait till the last minute and see who is available on loan, apparently the new rules regarding squad size, and home-grown quota of players has made alot of sides wait until the last minute before allowing players to leave on loan, to make sure they are going to meet the requirements.

Comment #12I was very optimistic when the season finished but ime not so sure now .
its saying sumik when we are getting excited about the prospect of Boyd coming to the toon.
Most fans were only wanting Boyd cos it would be someone through the door and a signing and thats where our standards are at the moment , the lies of wolves are signing and birmingham but we are just playing a waiting game imo anyway.

Comment #15We need somebody like Gregory Van Der Weil from Ajax. Who plays right back. We need him badly. Attacks like Jose Enrique but on the right. Just what we need. Our LB and RB attack. 2 CB’s stay back always unless Corner Kick. Keep CM back. Only 1. Every body else attack attack attack.

I thought that was the Big Advantage of guaranteeing promotion early – it gave us extra time to know we were implementing Plan A (we get promoted) instead of Plan B (another year in the desert).
There was only ever those two options, so the idea of now looking around to decide what to do seems a bit naive.
Shouldn’t that have been under consideration since January when we bought Best as insurance against injury scuppering our bid? I think any well-run club might have taken advantage of being first past the post.
And as Hughton has never uttered one single word of criticism of his paymasters, I think it is fair to read between the lines of his latest statement and take a liberal interpretation of it.
Hence: ‘there’s no money and therefore we cannot sign anyone’…. Simples.
