Jonas Gutierrez On Radar Screen Of Europa Champions

The Sunday Sun are reporting today that Atletico Madrid may be interested in Newcastle left winger Jonas Gutierrez.

Jonas Gutierrez – Atletico Madrid interested?

The Europa League champions think that his International team-mate Sergio Aguero already being at the Spanish club could potentially prove a draw to his friend Gutierrez.

One of the very last things we want to see, if indeed no transfer money is available this summer at Newcastle, is to lose some of our best players, so we have to hope that we don’t lose any of them – including Gutierrez.

Gutierrez is rated highly at Newcastle and it turns out that we paid around £5M for him – half of that amount going to both Real Mallorca and his former Argentine club Velez Sarsfield in compensation.

Newcastle of course initially thought they had signed Jonas as a free agent,  after his remaining contract at Real Mallorca was paid up.

We have to assume that these stories are coming out because journalists believe if Newcastle are to sign some new players this summer, they will first have to offload one or two players from the current squad.

And we always have to remember that today is Sunday – the make up stories for the Sunday papers day.

The 26 year-old Gutierrez has played 76 times for Newcastle with 4 goals and he so far has 16 caps for Argentina – and we don’t think this player is going anywhere this summer.

There is always going to be rumors about some of our players and I never know to believe them, as one day a Taylor is linked with Arsenal then the next day he is linked with Everton. This summer players are going to be linked with clubs and we are going to be linked with players who are free agents. These may never work out, so is it worth us speculating about it?

If Jonas has a quality World cup and Argentina go far we could fetch £2o million for him. If we could even get 10 for him id be very happy.

Maybe im not being realistic though?

Interesting really, as it begs the question is Jonas good in the prem? I watched nearly every game last season (not at the ground, as I live in Thailand) and I thought he was one of our worst players for giving the ball away. Bearing in mind that was against fizzy full backs and mids. I think his running and close control are admirable but his crossing for me is poor and that includes some of his simple square balls having shimmied around four guys. I understand he is, or seems happy and his relationship with Jose is good. But last season I seemed to spend half the games hoping that they wouldn’t pass it to him. Anyone else feel the same?

Although I rate Jonas as one of our key players for next season, I find myself inclined to agree with MarkO at post 2. If he has a great tournament, and the money is right, then I believe we are in no position to refuse it. The question is, who do we play out left after Jonas?

On the Campbell story, I would, why not for reasonable money? Older guys, for me should be centre backs and centre mids. Very handy in the last 20 minutes of the game to come on and calm the younger lads nerves. Experience tends to give them that extra second on the ball to look up and not give it away. I would do a pure swap for for Robbie Savage and Alan Smith in a heartbeat for instance, and Robbie should be on a free right now.

if he has an astonishing world cup and we get a crazy bid then i would be very tempted to take it.. Only if we have someone 100% lined up as a replacement. I dont rate him personally, no real end product. Cant shoot really, cant cross really.. Hes just unpredictable when hes runnin so looks dangerous. Although when he has the ball he puts pressure on defences, which in effect takes pressure of ours, so for this reason i do feel we need him so i wouldnt take a ‘decent’ offer… Would have to be too good to turn down sort of thing for me, and like i say with a fittin replacement already lined up, perhaps one who can cross a ball? Andy will need the best service he can get next season…

charlie adam/mcgeady? but as usual you’re getting ahead of yourselves,, IF, IF, IF
If he wants to go – after slogging it out down in the CCC then sacrificed once we can command a fee?? If hughton lets him go, etc, etc Hughton is loyal eh.

But I do agree jonas can’t cross.

why the f@ck would people be happy to sell jonas for 10 , 15 or even 20 million quid when you all know fine well that the greasy lump of lard who owns the club will not give any of it for team strengthening.

I could see Jonas doing well and going and never being seen again….I could also see him being a shining light next season and one the few skill players we have as opposed to power players ala nolan, andy, smith. He constantly gets fouled and if we had a free kick specialist we’d see that pay off more. He does get crosses in but its often to the spots he expects someone to be 20 feet straight in front of goal instead of where they are 10 feet from goal.

We certainly don’t have anyone to replace him so I hope we keep him

If Maradona plays Jonas right back, as he did in the friendly against Canada, then there is no chance that Jonas will be “astonishing” anyone. Maradona is playing his fullbacks in a strictly defensive formation, meaning no runs up the sideline that would get a scout’s attention.

surely if hes playin full backs in a strictly defensive formation he would have used a CB or a generally defensive player.. Not an attack minded winger

Jonas is a rare breed of player, he doesnt have great skill for a winger, and moves/runs quite strange in his unothadox style but his workrate is top notch and this has worked for his advantage and Jose Enrique’s, and whenever he plays he just lights up the game and ALWAYS has an impact, he should be a starter in the World Cup and if he does well Harry will snap him up as a better option than Bentley, Harry admired him and wanted him before he joined us, as long as we get good money thats ok.

What r u talking about??! The only world-class player we have (he plays for Argentina for God’s sake) and u casually talk about off-loading him for 5-10 even 20? That’s what got us in this trouble in the first place. Dozens of eg’s, just a couple here: Ginola (next season player of the year), Bellamy (keeps Brazil centre-forawrd on the bench), Milner (AV’s player of the season)… Are u guys blind? His job is not to score (although I dare say he can score more, it’s a matter of confidence and being told to shoot more after he clears entire defenses), he is wanted by top clubs and u say, ‘hmm ok, bye’?? People like Enrique, Jonas, who, apart from being world-class, have pledged allegiance to the club (unlike NZogbia types), must be treasured.

1, hes been gettin played at right back for argentina, so even maradonna dosnt want him takin up an attacking role.

2, clearly you dont watch the games or you would realise he cant cross a ball yourself.

Dont get me wrong hes gonna be valuable to us next season, but a 15-20 million bid? Id snap it up in a heart beat. We could get mcgeady to take his place, then onouha and o’hara for that sort of money. Lets hope he has a blinder at left back haha
