Why Would Newcastle Want To Sign Sol Campbell?

It will be most unlikely if Newcastle are interested in 35-year-old Sol Campbell, who is available on a free transfer from Arsenal at the end of the month.

Sol Campbell – no interest form Newcastle

Newcastle were linked very closely with the former England International last summer, with the player saying he would love to sign for Newcastle.

But his wage demands were just too high, and he eventually went for the money and signed on at Notts County for £5M a year with Sven Eriksson, but played only one game for them before getting out.

Sol eventually ended up with Arsene Wenger again at Arsenal and started 14 games this year for the Gunners.

But we don’t see what’s changed in one year with the Campbell situation at Newcastle, other than Sol is now one year older.

Better to bring in some younger players who can improve, and be available to the Newcastle in the longer term.

Newcastle have signed players in the past, when they were way past their best, and paid ridiculous wages that were never earned, and the club will not do that these days, when money is very tight.

Sol has links with the Newcastle area because he is engaged to Fiona Baratt – grand-daughter of  the Newcastle property tycoon Sir Laurie Barratt – and it would be convenient for him to play for Newcastle.

Chris Hughton is after younger players, and the news yesterday that Newcastle were interested in the 35 year-old was hard to believe.

After all – it was a Sunday.

Better he play for the mackems if he wants to cultivate his extended family in the north east. More press speculation this. At least it means some reporters have a sense of sick humour.

I think he might be a good signing. I don’t think his wage demands would be outrageous any more and I think he showed he’s got at least a year left. Hughton knows him well and I think he’d be interested in bringing experience into the side. Arguably Taylor is the only defender proven at prem level – so I think we definitely need a centre back. Kadar can’t be 4th choice, but I think if we can get the right centre back we won’t then need a left back.

If wages aren’t too high, and I don’t think he could be asking more than the players we already have I think Campbell would be a fantastic short-term signing, and really our policy is short term at the moment – we have to stay in the premierleague and any suggestion of signing young players has an similarly short term focus.

Ashley wants young players not to build a consistant team for a decade but to sell on quickly to try and clear the debts, so if we can get a good year out of a free transfer it is a sound investment as well.

I think we should sign him because he’s getting married to the duaghter of Sir Lawrie Barret who’s a very rich man & could then probably buy the Toon from Ashley.. lol well we can wish maybe.. lol

MarkO:- I agree would be a good signing on a one year deal, he isnt as good as he was, but his experience will be invaluable, and will help bring along s.taylor and kadar.

I have also heard wolves have made an approach for guthrie, cant see us selling him, i still think newcastle might try and offload joey barton, i hope not, as he is the only central midfielder we have that can make defence splitting passes, even though he is a A***hole

He has proven that despite being one year oder, he can still play PL football, and he did it at Arsenal who are about 20 times better than us at the minute!

Player/Coach role would be ideal in my opinion.

i wonder if we could get Ezequiel Garay on loan from real madrid, looked a top player when he played for racing santander, can play centre half or right back, he has the physical attributes to be suited by the english game, i think its worth a shot, and he isnt on massive wages either

Thinking about what eltoro and snoutshuffler have said I am pursuaded that a move for Campbell would be a good one. Good idea about him being a player coach too – that way we get the best of both worlds.

I agree with a lot of people in here

as long as his wages isnt expensive and willing to accept a one year contract, or even a player/coach deal, why not?

his experience will be invaluable, Kadar and Taylor, plus Simpson and our youngsters will learn loads from him, and we will have the luxury to loan out Kadar to play regularly first team football in championship….actually it is a good solution

why would we want to sing him?? thats easy, cos hes still better than any of our current central defenders at premier league level, he proved that in the latter part of last season, aswell as playing champions league football!!
