Former Newcastle midfield star Gary Speed has been awarded the MBE for his services to the game of football.
Gary Speed – while at Newcastle United
Newcastle was Gary’s third club after being at Leeds United and Everton and he went on to play a total of 284 games for the famous black and whites with 40 goals from 1998 until 2004.
After leaving Newcastle he went to Bolton and then Sheffield United and in his playing career appeared in an amazing 831 games with 133 goals – a fantastic career for the Welsh-born midfielder.
Gary also played 85 times for Wales with 7 goals and has a big future in the game either as a commentator of the game or as a coach, and maybe one day we’ll see him back at Newcastle in some coaching position.
We hope so – and we offer our congratulations to Gary.
In other birthday honors announced, the beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones, the Welsh-born actress who is now 40, was made a CBE for her services to film and charity.
