It was interesting to see Craig Moore , the former Newcastle center-back, playing for Australia tonight against Germany, but unfortunately the Socceroos were no match for the technically skilled Germans and were hammered 4-0.
Craig Moore – former Newcastle player in Australia colors
34 year-old Craig joined Newcastle from German side Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2007, and stayed for a couple of seasons, but he always seemed to be injured.
But when Craig played for Newcastle he was good and was a no-nonsense defender. In those two seasons Craig played only 31 times for the Magpies with no goals, and he went back home to Australia to play for the Brisbane Roar.
And Craig showed his indomitable character after undergoing surgery for testicular cancer 19 months ago, from which he has now gladly fully recovered, and he made his 51st international appearance today – good for him.
It’s just amazing the way 32 year-old Miroslav Klose and 25 year-old Lukas Podolski play so well for Germany after both of them had poor club seasons – Klose at Bayern Munich and Podolski at Cologne, but they become different players in a German shirt.
Klose has played 97 times for Germany with 49 goals and Podolski has 74 appearances with 39 goals – – unbelievable.
It didn’t help in the 56th minute when Everton’s Tim Cahill got himself sent off with a straight red card although the TV replays showed that decision to be harsh.
But we shouldn’t over-estimate Germany on this display, although they are the first team to score more than a single goal in a game in the tournament.
The individual Australian players were just not good enough today and add to that they didn’t play well as a team, and the Socceroos will have a very hard job of progressing past the group stages.
