Newcastle After Georgios Samaras – But Is He Good Enough?

Celtic’s Greek striker 25 year-old Georgios Samaras is reported to be part of a shock switch to Premiership club Newcastle United.

Georgios Samaras – is this guy good enough?

The 6’4″ striker, who can also play on the wing, moved to Celtic in 2008 from Manchester City and in 97 games for the Scottish giants has scored 36 goals.

There is a report  in The Daily Record the player  is wanted by Tyneside club Newcastle United.

Newcastle had been rumoured to be after Rangers’ striker Kris Boyd – although manager Chris Hughton has denied they are interested in Kris – for anybody who wants to listen.

Samaras may be available from Celtic, with new manager Neil Lennon now in place, and perhaps said to be  keen to cash in on the inconsistent striker, as Georgios enters the last 12 months of his contract on Clydeside.

hit-and-miss striker as he enters the last 12 months of his contract.

The news form Scpotlans is that Samaras is expected to cost around £1.5M from Celtic – and that amount is probably available to Hughotn.

Samaras moved to Manchester  City from Dutch club Heerenveen for £6M in 2006, but was hardly impressive for the Eastlands club, and in around  55 appearances in Manchester he scored just 12 goals.

Clubs in Italy and Spain are also said to be interested in the Heraklion, Greece born striker, but we have to wonder whether this hit or miss striker is good enough to improve the Newcastle squad.

We don’t think so – but what do you think?

my ex gf’s dad who used to scout for youth players for newcastle, mentioned that they had enquired about him in the last few days, i really really hope we havent gone for him, terrible attitude, work rate, and no better in a ability than what we already have at the club, someone mentioned riquelme on another post, wouldnt love him at newcastle, would give us the creativity we need!!

Oh please God no. I can only hope they saw greece play south korea – and realised that Ki from celtic is a fantastic prospect as opposed to this feckless, goal shy journey man.

Please no, not this lumbering goal shy journeyman – did anyone see greece play south korea? I hope they were actually watching korea’s Ki from Celtic who even at 20 dominated in midfield.

Greece looked like wheezing uncles playing kick about with their nephews in the park.

36 goals in 97 games is not goal shy. This blog is fast becoming a whingers site. Theres nowt wrong with the bloke, even for a club such as newcastle who can pick and choose who they get (NOT). He fits in perfectly to the 25 and under bargain price players newcastle want. Dont understand where this stuff about a bad attitude comes from, he always seemed up for it when he was at man city. i say give him a chance (oh and hes easily better than Leon Best ffs)
Unless you all think we should hold out for Messi??

its a no you rediculous little person. Just because you don’t like a player doesn’t mean you should direct hatred towards someone who thinks that player is ok. It’s childish and frankly a bit sad. Now its your bed time komfort, try not to wet yourself in your sleep.

If this is the standard of player we are now reduced to looking at we are in big trouble he isn’t good enough for the Championship never mind the PL

How is he not good enough for CC Championship? I have to agree with Markaccus here, alot of people here need a reality check. We just got promoted, this club owes a lot of money. He’s better than Best, but I would still prefer if we could sign a fast, high work rate striker.

Cheers for that gunn. And I agree I’m sure we all would love to sign higher profile players, however as you say we are not in the position to do so, and despite a lot of opinion on here we could do a lot worse than samaras

stavros @ 11 we’ve got…loadsa money…& the last thing the toon need is a useless tossa like your fellow countryman pulling on the black & white strip.

of course the other .. tit .. that owns the club claims we haven’t so he’ll probably end up signing him..

…& it’ll be a very sad day if we do.

Just can’t see any truth in this story, samaras can’t get in a terrible celtic team & is too similar in style to what we have already. It makes no sense unless your his agent or are another sad lazy journo with nowt else to write about.

Just look where the rumour has come from, the daily hun & someone’s ex-girlfriend’s dad who used to scout for the youth team.

komfort i agree about your opinion on the player, but everyone has their own opinions, and thats the whole idea of a blog, not to get insulted because of an opinion. I would be very annoyed if we signed him, there are better players out there in our range, i would even rather see chopra come back than us signing samaras.

@ anyone else who wants to discuss football… If samaras comes and oes nowt, we havnt really lost much, wheras if he scores bags of goals we have gained out of the whole affair. He is ly 25 so you’d think his better years would be starting about now. If best was worth a chance then surely samaras deserves a pop?

markaccus I agree the tranfer fee isnt a massive risk on samaras, but we have to spend the little money we have wisely, if they ARE going to sign him i hope its just on loan, but would prefer it if we didnt, how about bojinov from man city, he is a good player who has had injury problems, was on loan at parma last season, seen him a few times looked to be coming back to his best, signing him on loan for a season could be a good move

man city also have Jo aswell, really talented player, but worrying that everton cancelled his loan because of a breach of conduct, so might have attitude problems, but has a good scoring record

Yes Geordie, we must spend wisely (but not Dennis Wisely!) Maybe a loan spell to look him over would be a plan. Don’t know much about bojinov, but if injuries are an issue i’d be worried about him coming to the toon. we had our fair share of crocks. Jo on the other hand does look useful, probably has more pace than samaras which we could do with, but he’d have to behave, we can do without another nut case on the books lol.

Yeah we have had plenty of nutcases on the books over the years, the player i wish we could get would be daniel sturridge on loan from chelsea, will be a top player in the next 2-3 years, has pace, very direct, scores goals, good work rate and attitude. Well bojinov was injury free last year, it was just one injury he had, but complications because of it, he is fine now. And on sturridge, i dont know if chelsea would allow him to go on loan with the new rules about squad size and british players etc, in the past they would have, but now they need to have a quota of home grown players, so they probably wont now.

In which case bojinov sounds ideal. The simple answer over the new rules is that we need to keep hold of our youngsters, instead of selling them at the first sign of tallent, then we wouldn’t need to loan everyone elses kids. I really would like to see Ranger kept here instead of loaning him out, and for him to play quite often as i am convinced he could do well.

Ed, did you write this in a hurry by any chance? Scpotlans…!!

Seriously though, for what it’s worth, I wouldn’t spend money on Samaras if we’re on a tight budget. His scoring record in the SPL is not good – it’s a weak league. Ranger and Best will struggle to get into our team next season – is Samaras better than them? No.

Please GOD NO! He is useless! I would rather have Xisco back in the team than Samaras. I live in Scotland and one of my mates is a Celtic fan and he laughed when I mentioned it to him…In otherwords, they would be glad to get rid of him.

Flair20, exactly i see no reason to sign him, no better or different to what we already have, we need someone with pace and movement. And even more than that we are desperate for a decent right back, and another winger

Let’s get riquelme! I know he doesn’t fit this under 26 policy, but he’s exactly the sort of player we need. West Ham are in pole position for him and I reckon (hope) he might prefer coming to us.
