Newcastle left-winger Jonas Gutierrez did not look particularly good in Argentina’s first match at right-back when the former World Champions beat Nigeria 1-0 last Saturday.
Jonas Gutierrez – will he keep his place?
Argentina will kick off in about 90 minutes in their second game against South Korea, and the Koreans are currently top of Group B and it should be a very close game.
Jonas is happy to continue at right-back for Argentina at the World Cup, but he looked very vulnerable in that first half against Nigeria.
Jonas said today:
“It was good, I felt good playing there. I have played there in Mallorca and also for the national team against Peru and Canada. I know the position well.”
“There is no way I would fill in any position for the team if it was going to do them harm. But I feel comfortable at right-back, and the team was strong in defense.”
But there are rumors from the Argentina training camp that point to Inter Milan’s Nicolas Burdisso to take over at right-back for the Argies – Nicolas can play anywhere in the back four.
Otherwise Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung could have a field day down the left wing for South Korea today.
But we are also well aware that manager Diego Maradona likes Jonas and if Burdisso does come in at right back, we still think Jonas will keep his place and could start down one of the wings for Argentina.
We’ll know very shortly.
Late Note: Jonas Gutierrez again started at right back against South Korea today
