Newcastle Captaincy Up For Grabs – Who Should Be Captain?

Chris Hughton has come out today and said the Newcastle United captaincy is effectively up for grabs next season.

Kevin Nolan – the new Newcastle captain?

In Nicky Butt’s absence last season Alan Smith got the nod, and then when Alan was not in the side, Kevin Nolan was captain.

With Kevins’ fantastic season last season, and his never-say-die attitude – not to mention his 18 goals – he must be a firm favorite with most Newcastle fans to be Newcastle’s new captain.

We’ll put up a poll to see what our readers really think – so please vote when you get the chance.

This is what Chris Hughton said today about the Newcastle captaincy:

“The captaincy hasn’t been decided yet – it’s something that we’ll make a decision on when we get back for pre-season,”“I know it is a very privileged position to be the captain of a club like Newcastle United and we will discuss all sorts of things before making the decision."

“I’m sure there are a lot of the lads who would like to be considered for it. What we have in Alan Smith and Kevin Nolan are two players who were very much involved last season and who had experience of being the captain last season.”

“Alan had it on most occasions but Kevin also had the honour a few times towards the end of the season and both of them coped with it very well.”  “It’s something we’ll talk about and make a decision on.”

“But to be honest, I don’t think it is too important because we have a lot of players with experience and who take responsibility, which we saw in the Championship last season.”

The very fact that Chris has said he hasn’t yet decided who to make captain next season, tells us he is thinking of changing it from Alan Smith.

Both Smith and Nolan are respected in the dressing room, and both are very experienced and fully committed to the club.

But we have to think that Kevin has more chance of being in the starting eleven in most of the PL games next season,  rather than Alan, and Alan is prone to being injured too much.

Smith started last season extremely well but this year he was in and out of the starting eleven at Newcastle.

We’d just love to see Kevin Nolan captain with Alan as the vice captain – and the team on the field will be in very good hands with those two.

Let us know who you want to be captain next season – and please vote in our new poll here.

I think next season we’ll need Captain Marvel and Captain America to make sure we stay up

How about Birdseye? Or even Pugwash? It will be Nolan I reckon but I still like the idea of Harper on a loyalty and attitude basis. Perhaps we need him as a qualified ref in the dressing room as well?

Steve Taylor could be Newcastle’s future captain if we convince him to extend his contract, but for next season it needs to be Nolan……

New contract for S Taylor and the captaincy, if not Nolan.

It has to be Smudger for his leadership qualities and tenacity. Smith and Nolan in midfield will rip apart the majority of premiership teams.

You don’t decide this until all the new players are in, anyway. Perhaps Hughton should let the players vote on it. I don’t know if Smith will be a certain starter, which is surely a prerequisite for the job. Nolan probably will. It could just as well be Williamson to break up the clique. Your poll is a bit limited, Ed, in the choices available.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? The way you are all going on it sounds like Nolan and Smith are good enough for the prem next season – one of them…maye but both would book us relegation back down. steve taylor or harper and then, maybe nolan
