In a surprisingly poor performance tonight, England were fairly well held to a 0-0 draw by a decent looking Algeria team, in the Green Point Stadium, Cape Town.
Wayne Rooney – another very poor game for England
For England fans who want England to win something – soon – this game epitomizes why they don’t and won’t – because it looked like the England players were more concerned they didn’t lose, than if they actually won the game. Most of the England players actually looked frightened tonight – frightened in case they made a mistake.
What an attitude.
And as so often happens on the big stage with our England players, they again massively under-achieved, while on the other side of the coin, Algeria played very well and above themselves, and put together a strong game, and deserved the point.
Nobody on the England side had a good game, but as we expected, David James in the England goal was safe enough, but “world-class” Wayne Rooney looked a little like our own Shola Ameobi at times, at his worst.
Wayne looked just hopeless tonight – as the ball kept bouncing off him as it sometimes does with Shola – as Wayne seemed to have absolutely no control of the ball and had a terrible game – in short – he was just hopeless and should have been replaced early in the second half – to wake the lad up.
And Fabio Capello’s team selection was hardly inspiring either, as he again started a striker who had scored just 7 goals in 60 games for England, and cannot even get his game at his English club – Emile Heskey.
If there are no better strikers in England than Emile than I’m a Chinaman, and Fabio only brought on the 6’7″ Peter Crouch – 21 goals in 38 appearances for England – in the last few minutes.
Emile did have one good chance in the second half – but he missed it and perhaps Fabio could have made changes much earlier in the second half than he did , since England were obviously not functioning well, and never looked like scoring and seemed to be so low on confidence and ambition.
England will be mauled in the English press for this performance, and this time they deserve it – because they showed no guts for the game – none at all – and if anything this performance was even worse than the way they played against the USA.
As we so often say – great players play well when it really matters – and although most of the England players are stars for their club sides, something is missing when they pull on the white shirt of England – they seem to become scared – even terrified of making a mistake.
So no doubt we’ll hear a few excuses as to why they were so bad tonight, maybe it’s the ball, they can’t sleep, the food, they don’t see their wives and girlfriends enough – and other excuses they will make up – but it all means absolutely nothing.
The only truth is that we have two draws from the first two games , and while a win against Slovenia next Wednesday could still put England through – that will be very hard to achieve from this seemingly spiritless England team.
Until England players gain the mental strength to win games when it really matters, and not shy away from their responsibilities in these big contests – England will win nothing – well not in my lifetime anyway.
It hurts t0 say that, but it’s the absolute brutal truth.
