World Cup Just Too Much For Most England Players

In a surprisingly poor performance tonight, England were fairly well held to a 0-0 draw by a decent looking Algeria  team,  in the Green Point Stadium, Cape Town.

Wayne Rooney – another very poor game for England

For England fans who want England to win something –  soon – this game epitomizes why they don’t and won’t – because it looked like the England players were more concerned they didn’t lose, than if they actually won the game. Most of the England players actually looked frightened tonight – frightened in case they made a mistake.

What an attitude.

And as so often happens on the big stage with our England players, they again massively under-achieved, while on the other side of the coin, Algeria played very well and above themselves, and put together a strong game, and deserved the point.

Nobody on the England side had a good game, but as we expected, David James in the England goal was safe enough, but “world-class” Wayne Rooney looked a little like our own Shola Ameobi at times,  at his worst.

Wayne looked just hopeless tonight –  as the ball kept bouncing off him as it sometimes does with Shola – as Wayne seemed to have absolutely no control of the ball and had a terrible game – in short – he was just hopeless and should have been replaced early in the second half – to wake the lad up.

And Fabio Capello’s team selection was hardly inspiring either, as he again started a striker who had scored just 7 goals in 60 games for England, and cannot even get his game at his English club – Emile Heskey.

If there are no better strikers in England than Emile than I’m a Chinaman, and Fabio only brought on the 6’7″ Peter Crouch – 21 goals in 38 appearances for England – in the last few minutes.

Emile did have one good chance in the second half – but he missed it and perhaps Fabio could have made changes much earlier in the second half than he did , since England were obviously not functioning well, and never looked like scoring and seemed to be so low on confidence and ambition.

England will be mauled in the English press for this performance, and this time they deserve it – because they showed no guts for the game – none at all – and if anything this performance was even worse than the way they played against the USA.

As we so often say – great players play well when it really matters – and although most of the England players are stars for their club sides, something is missing when they pull on the white shirt of England – they seem to become scared – even terrified of making a mistake.

So no doubt we’ll hear a few excuses as to why they were so bad tonight, maybe it’s the ball, they can’t sleep, the food, they don’t see their wives and girlfriends enough  – and other excuses they will make up – but it all means absolutely nothing.

The only truth is that we have two draws from the first two games , and while a win against Slovenia next Wednesday  could still put England through – that will be very hard to achieve from this seemingly spiritless England team.

Until England players gain the mental strength to win games when it really matters, and not shy away from their responsibilities in these big contests – England will win nothing – well not in my lifetime anyway.

It hurts t0 say that, but it’s the absolute brutal truth.

Why did Capello persist with Gerrard on the left? Then a straight swap of Lennon for SWP? Such a poor performance argh

I hope Rooney gets a hate campaign against him after his comment. Joey Barton would be lynched in the street but I guess Rooney has a new movie coming out soon so he will be let off as he needs to do promotion tours.

Love the way the commentators stuck up for England, saying they looked too restricted? No, they looked like overpaid divvies that had no fire in their bellies… they don’t deserve to wear the shirt.

I’m an irishman but an avid newcastle fan and follower of english football. But here’s my 2 cents.
Why on earth is joe cole ignored again, he is the only continental style player england have and would add the creatie spark england are severely lacking. England need to play a 433 system with rooney playing the role he does at man. utd and joe cole with a free role. This system also suits lampard, maybe even play gerrard off rooney to the right and joe cole to the left.

I dont know his selection was strange, in my opinion heskey shouldnt even be in the squad, no offense to him, he’s a game lad and gives his all but he doesnt cut it at this level and wasnt even 1st choice at villa.

Rooney is a disgrace – I felt physically sick watching him. He couldn’t have given less of a crap, yet he’ll bang 3 in versus us on August 14th.

I agree with wickywoowoo, I hope there is a hate campaign against him. I’d join in and I’m the sort of guy that defends a player to the death

he looks tired and i wouldnt be surprised if he had an injury.

BUT still he was woeful in that game

Yes – I live in the UK. I agree with any negative comment about troops too. I have no sympathy for people who want money to have the right to kill people.
Tough luck. UK or US, they’re all nutters happily fighting by volunteering in wars that are bent and financially driven. Those who do have souls and refuse to go – get singled out and abused by people who then cry when the soulless ones get killed.

Was a terrible performance though and Rooney’s been very disappointing, he must be injured and obviously frustrated with himself…..

First time that capello seems lost too which is more worrying, where’s J Cole, is he injured? It was obvious something needed changing but nothing did.

    Shame.

Supporting England is like supporting the Toon. You know they will never win anything. The difference at the minute is that Toon fans know after 50 years of losing that they will never win anything but England fans cling onto the delusion of 1966 like NUFC fans used to cling onto the delusion of the FA CUP wins of the 50s. The bottom line is that England players are not that good. Lets not compare the wages of Algeria with the 150 grand a week of England players. Could you spot a difference in class? England players look really good when they play in quality Premiership teams and they are supporting world class players and bullying the majority of the crap teams in the Prem like NUFC and Brum etc etc. Take those same England players out of their comfort zone of the club teams and throw them together in an England team where they have to play other quality international players and they are shown up for what they are: overrated, overpaid average players. Teams only underperform on an occasional basis. When they play poorly on a regular basis, that is not underperforming but their natural level. NUFC did not under perform when they got relegated. They got relegated because they were crap and had been flirting with relegation for several seasons before that. A team under-performs for several games, not several seasons. England has as much chance of winning this Cup as NUFC has of winning the Premiership. Bob Hope and….. I just wish the media and the public would grow up and be more realistic. Half a dozen other teams are much more skilful and it would be a travesty if England won it. You want the best team to win it. Do we really want the equivalent of Wimbledon (FA Cup) winning the World Cup???

Why call Joe Cole up and not play him? We lacked any sort of spark in the midfield. Gerrard just does not want to play on the left. Capello should play the players in their favoured positions, keep it simple. The 4 4 2 formation hasn’t and will not work, it’s time to change.

exactly right. England players are made to look good in the prem because of a) the good foreign players they play with and b) the rubbish opposition they play against.

And yes they look as is they are frightened to make a mistake because they are. Look waht happened to Green when he made a mistake: he was immediately dropped and replaced by James who is not the first choice keeper.

Eternal optimism, for me anyway, is part of being an England and Newcastle supporter.
Having calmed down after that abomination, I’m thinking/hoping Algeria could be our Leyton Orient.
Let’s hope so. Deludely or not I’m still keeping the faith. That success always seems to be just around the corner.

England now just only high merchandise football team. You can look around the dressing room, Rooney Lampard Gerrard SWP Terry A.Cole etc more than half of them are high earner superstar who don’t care too much about each other. Stranger in dressing room, Less Spirit, no teamwork so why they can play well together on the pitch !?

Some of them think it’s not fair for them to get critism after poor performance. But I don’t think so.

You nailed it Ed. Playing with fear. Worrying about the opposition instead of playing your own game. Like Allardyce had us playing at home to Derby !!!

It’s so so simple, swap Joe Cole in for Heskey and bob’s your uncle.

    where to start

i think crapello (6million a year) only to bottle it, you can look at the players as much as you like,,,

like hesky , have we no one better ,, to be fair to him, in the last 2 games he has been one of our more willing players

our midfield had no shape what so ever, no natural width, he might aswell hav played carrick as instead of lennon,,,

6 million a year and thats the best he has,, what a joke,

rooooney, omg , ppl used to slag shearer of cos he hadnt scored in xamount of games, but at least the guy put himself about,, roooooney is on holiday having a kick about with his rich friends, full stop,,

83 mins then bring crouch on, hmmm im still laughing now,,

in my opinion ,, make 2 changes from last nights team,,
crouch ( not a fan of his at all but) for rodney rooney,,,
    j cole for lampost

push stevie g up behinde the front 2 floating, j cole on the left,, keeping tight to the line, swp or lennon the same on the right touch line,, and keep giving the the ball,,,

lets stop carrying ppl,, its not like it was 30 years ago, when these leser team where only there to make up the nos,, there all hard working teams , with 1 or 2 really good players
