Are Newcastle Still After Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara?

We noticed yesterday that The Telegraph had reported that Newcastle manager Chris Hughton was still  strongly linked with Tottenham midfielder O’Hara.

Jamie O’Hara – playing for Portsmouth last season

We had thought that O’Hara would have been a good possibility at Newcastle, but only if he was available for around £3M, which we think the Newcastle club could afford.

But the news a few weeks ago was that new West Ham United manager Avram Grant, who was managing Jamie at Portsmouth at the end of last season, was also interested in the player and the fee was quoted as £6M.

If it comes a battle between West Ham and Newcastle for the Tottenham player, the Tyneside club will not win.

So if indeed Jamie is going to cost around £6M, we think that puts an end to any interest from the Newcastle club.

As far as a good central midfielder goes, we could still go after Denmark’s 30 year-old Christian Poulsen of Juventus, on a season-long loan deal.

The experienced midfielder could certainly add something to the Newcastle squad for next season.

Do we really need more experienced central midfielders for the sake of it Ed? We have nolan, barton, guthrie and smith plus vuckic vying for two slots.

A link up no. 10 support striker, left footed cover, versatile defender and a young striker are CH’s priorities.

I still think that we should sell at least one central midfielder – probably Smith. He simply doesn’t look likely to be able to make it as a strong defensive midfielder at Premier League level.

I think that we would then need to bring in a new, faster, more natural defensive midfielder to provide a platform for the attacking abilities of the likes of Nolan, Guthrie and Barton.

That is, unless Barton has the ability to play defensive midfielder and is willing to do so?

Hughton should go for Colin Kazim-Richards who is at Fenerbache. A season-long loan would be a shrewd bit of business for someone who can play on either wings or just behind the striker.
