Chris Hughton has confirmed what we suspected in our report earlier today – that Newcastle indeed have an interest in 29 year-old JLloyd Samuel, but no offer has yet been made for the player.
JLloyd Samuel – some interest form Newcastle
This is what Chris told the Evening Chronicle today:
“I can’t say there hasn’t been a phone call to see what the situation is (with Samuel). But it has not gone as far as a bid, definitely not,”
“He would have been probably one of a few players we’ve enquired about from that club even though at the moment we are in the process of finding out the availability of certain players and he was one of them.”
“But I can say that it is nothing more than that at this stage.”
That’s an interesting second paragraph because former Newcastle center-back Andy O’Brien and central defender 29 year-old Danny Shittu are also thought to be available from Bolton Wanderers.
Although these players are older than we thought Chris was looking for this summer, either one of them would add some PL experience to the Newcastle back line.
It seems that Chris is busy testing the waters on the availability of various players Newcastle may be interested in – and this one leaked out – and of course when Chris is confronted with the news – he doesn’t deny it – he’s too honest for that.
But he wants to keep things close to his chest as much as he can – and that’s understandable since he would like to get the deals done before they break out in the press.
We believe that Samuel, if Newcastle signed him, would be used a s a utility defender and would also give Jose Enrique some competition in the left back spot.
Things seem to be moving along on the transfer front at Newcastle – if fairly slowly at this stage of the summer.

Comment #1Do we really need more central defenders? It will be news when we hear something genuine in the pipeline about some wingers though. Is Samuel for cover or what?

Over age has beens and never wassers. What is Hughton thinking of ? It worries me when he passes over someone like Moses for Best.

Comment #7Hughton didn’t pass over Moses, the player rejected us. We signed Best instead to make sure we had cover in case of an injury crisis during the promotion run-in.

Comment #9Hmm I suppose he would be a good solid buy to serve as back up, the type of player we’ll be after in our current position which isn’t too bad a thing.
Really contradicts our transfer policy though doesn’t it? He wouldn’t be a player worth breaking it for.
