Even though the news is that Bolton have rejected Newcastle’s initial bid of £1M for their defender JLloyd Samuel, the news in Bolton is that manager Owen Coyle will let the player leave this summer.
JLloyd Samuel – could be Newcastle’s first summer signing
While JLloyd can play anywhere across the back four, which is good, it seems that Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is looking to use Samuel to challenge Jose Enrique for the left-back position at Newcastle.
Samuel signed a four year deal when he signed for Bolton on 1st July 2007, and he’s played over 80 times for Bolton in that period, but it’s significant he has played just 3 games since Owen Coyle arrived at Bolton in January of this year.
If it’s indeed true that Newcastle have had a £1M offer turned down, we would expect them to go back with a slightly improved offer, and we would expect Bolton to accept it, and it could be that 29 year-old Samuel will become Newcastle’s first summer signing.
The Bolton News is reporting there has been no official bid for the 29-year-old, despite the reports of last night, that Wanderers have rejected a £1m offer, but they are reporting there have indeed been informal discussions between the two clubs.
It’s also no secret that Owen Coyle is willing to let some of his fringe players leave this summer.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1I’ve also read that no bid as actually been made, just informal chats between the clubs regarding the £1m rated player…
So if he’s rated at £1m, then we should have to bid any higher when we actually do make an official bid for him 🙂

Comment #4Where is the money coming from? And where is the “only players under 26”-rule when we need it? Well no, ok, he’s a decent player but he’s hardly improving the squad a lot. Good for squad width I guess.

Comment #5I hope this is rubbish and also the rumours about Harper leaving for Celtic with the Algerian clown/keeper coming in. If these transfers do happen then I really do doubt that CH can cut it as a PL manager and think we will have a long hard season to look forward to.

Comment #6can’t see there being anything to the harper rumour.
i mean he’s waited 17 years to be no1, then after 1 season he’s gonna bugger off to play in the mickey mouse league?
can’t see it happenin.

Comment #8I don’t see why everybody is so down on this signing. He has plenty of Prem experience, and is very adaptable. We will need cover for all positions this season, so whilst he will not add anything new to the team, he will at least give us the luxary of a spare full back. At 29 he has at least 3 years of football left in him. Well worth 1M in my opinion.

Comment #11I think CH as had words with Ashley re this 26 age limit for players & told him that this season we have to maybe go for the slightly older, more experienced players instead just to secure our PL status, then next season we can start to bring in the younger talent to cover & learn!!!

Couldn’t have put it better myself. It’s not just about getting decent players in as cover, we need to make sure they have the right personality and character as well. The club is starting to move forward – we would be taking a step backwards by signing someone like Samuel. Players like Kadar are the future of Newcastle United. A 29-year-old playboy is not.

Comment #14You gotta be kidding me CH. I’m sure there’re better options! Can’t believe we’re going to sign someone who can’t even make it to the Bolton 1st team.
