Newcastle manager Chris Hughton has put to bed two transfer stories of the last day or two today in the Evening Chronicle.
Steve Harper – Newcastle goalkeeper going nowhere
The news this morning that Celtic were after our own Steve Harper has been quashed by Chris, as he told the Chronicle today:
“I can categorically state that there is nothing in that,” We just won’t sell him.”
“He’s our No 1 goalkeeper, he had a great season for us and he’s a very important member of our squad.”
It may be that Celtic manager Neil Lennon is interested in acquiring Harper, but as we reported earlier today there’s just no way Chris will even think about letting the Newcastle number one move anywhere – not that Harper would want to leave the club he’s now been at for 17 years.
And Chris revealed some minor truths about Newcastle being after 24 year-old Algerian goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi, but says Newcastle are not interested in this player.
The Sofia owner Ventseslav Stefanov had claimed “real interest” from Newcastle yesterday, and that’s something that was new news to the Newcastle manager, as he clarified things today:
“I actually had a text message from someone about that player, asking if I would be interested and that is as far as that has gone,”
“I wasn’t even aware of him or his name, so it’s surprising to hear those reports. We are definitely not interested.”
We suspect the text message actually came from the Sofia owner himself, who was probably trying to talk up his goalkeeper so he could make a sale.
These are interesting comments from Chris today, because it shows there are tiny pieces of truth in some of the reports – about 5% truth. 😀
Since these stories have now been proved to be false – just watch how they keep turning up as stories over the next couple of weeks.
Comments always welcomed.
