There were rumors last January that Newcastle were interested in former Newcastle center-back Andy O’Brien.
Danny Shittu – one of three Newcastle would take?
We never really knew at that time whether Chris Hughton was interested in Andy but Chis said yesterday he had asked about the availability of a number of players at Bolton Wanderers.
And while we had expected Hughton to go after players under 25 who can still improve the players he is looking at at the Bolton club are in their late 20s or have reached 30.
Shittu turns 30 in September, Andy O’Brien is 31 next Tuesday and Samuel is 30 next March.
The Newcastle Journal today is hinting that Andy is one of the players Chris is interested in – although we also know that Danny Shittu is available.
We understand that between the three players O’Brien, JLloyd Samuel and Shittu, Chris is interested in knowing the valuation of each of the players, and he could take what he considers the player who offers the best bargain for Newcastle.
We thinks that’s OK because all three have significant Premier League experience, and would help the Newcastle defense, but as yet the two managers have not talked officially about any players.
Newcastle have some good defenders in the center of the field in Coloccini, Taylor, Williamson and young up-and-coming Tamas Kadar, so it looks like he is trying to replace Fitz Hall, who Newcastle will presumably not be signing, if they can get one of the three Bolton defenders.
Owen Coyle has come out today and said he hasn’t yet talked to Chris Hughotn at Newcastle – this is what Owen said:
“I’ve not spoken to Chris Hughton on a football level and to the best of my knowledge neither has (chairman) Phil Gartside,”
“I don’t know whether this has come from agents. I dare say Chris has got a plan or something in mind but that certainly hasn’t reached me yet.”
We think it would be a decent start to get one of these players – because he will likely add experience to the squad but would have a battle to be a starter next season at Newcastle.
