Has Hughton Been Offered A Contract Extension

When Chris got Newcastle promoted last season and saved the owner Mike Ashley an absolute fortune, we expected him to be offered a new and improved contract this summer.

Chris Hughton – new contract offered?

But as far as we know Chris and Colin Calderwood are still working off the contract they got last October, which runs out next June.

It could even be that Chris does not get an extended contract but we would at least expect his wages top rise form the £250K/year he was getting last season.

Kevin Keegan and Sam Allardyce were getting £3M/year at the club when they were managing under Ashley in the Premier League.

But Chris is still unproven in the top English League and it could well be that Ashely is waiting to see how Chris and the team perform in the top flight, before considering a contract extension.

After all Ashley has been burned by having to sack Allardyce just 8 months into his 3 year contract and that cost the club a pretty penny and said to be around £6M for Sam and his back-room staff, and of course they also had to shell out at least £ 2M to Kevin Keegan also – after that nasty little saga.

That’s £8M that could have spent on new players at Newcastle.

That’s a waste of Newcastle money and it could be they may even offer Chris Hughton a rolling yearly contract as Freddy Shepherd did with the great Sir Bobby Robson.

That has advantages for the club in that it encourages the manager to do well each season, so that he gets an extension of the contract, but of course if Chris meets with good success in the Premier League, we would still expect him to get say a 3 year deal with suitable compensation for such a big job.

We’ve heard nothing about a new contract for Chris and wonder what his siutation is.

When the club issued that strange statement in May, they were at pains to say that Chris Hughton was contracted to the club only through the end of this season – this is what the statement said about Chris:

Chris Hughton is the Manager of Newcastle United Football Club and has a contract in place until the end of the 2010/2011 season.

I’d guess CH will be the least paid manager in the prem and Ashley will continue to take advantage of him imo.

I agree with both of the above. And I don’t know how anyone can survive on just £250,000 a year. Its managers like Keegan and Allardyce and all the rest of them that need new contracts – seriously scaled-back contracts.
If this WC 2010 has taught us anything, its surely that a helluva lot of pampered prima donnas in the Prem are not worth a fraction of what their agents pump them up to be. And that surely goes for managers as well. I am not about to weep for Hughton if he has to get by on 1/4 of a mil salary.

Imo I think some manager go out of there way to get good contracts only to get the sack so that they can get a massive pay off from it, I mean why should they work if they can get a £3m pay off day every now & then lol 😉

I feel for CH. He apparently gets 3 times in a week what I get in a year before tax.
