Hughton Likely To Bring In A Full-Back This Summer

Not too much new news in the Newcastle journal today, other then a rehash of yesterday’s news, although there is an interview with Danny Simpson.

Danny Simpson – a fan of Ryan Taylor

Danny is out until September with his ankle injury and we do expect Chris Hughton to bring in a replacement at right back, if only because we do not have enough cover at full-back.

But Danny thinks that Ryan Taylor will do just great there at the beginning of the season as he said today:

“Ryan is a great player and if he is playing at right-back on the first day of the season then we’ll have no worries whatsoever,”

“He played in the Premier League for years – he’s played right-back and right-wing for us but he is a good defender with plenty of quality on the ball as well.”

“Ryan did well whenever he was asked to step in last year and he has England under-21 caps, which you don’t get unless you’re a good player who can play at the top level.”

“It’s obviously not up to me to do the manager’s job for him and if he decides he wants to bring someone in then fair enough, but he already has a good right-back option in Ryan.”

“I think having him in the squad as well helped me last year because I knew that if I let my performances drop then he would was ready to come in and replace me.”

It almost sounds as if Danny doesn’t want Chris Hughton to bring in another right back, but we all know that competition in the squad is healthy and helps to ensure the lads who are wearing the shirt play well because they know someone is breathing down their neck for that starting position.

As we said we expect at least a utility defender to be brought in over the summer, and if he can play in either full back position that would be very good.

We also think that it’s a big season for Ryan Taylor next season, and if he doesn’t get many appearances for Newcastle he could well be on his way out of  Tyneside next summer.

Carlos Salcido, he’s a right touch, really shined in the world cup and at 30 years old, will still get 3/4 years out of him.
Great defender, classy when he goes forward, and looks hard as nails.

Kyle Naughton is available young has lots of speed and can really defend at any position.
