There is news in the Sunday papers today that Newcastle are after Celtic left-back Lee Naylor.
Lee Naylor – free agent from Celtic
The former England Under-21 left-back Naylor (3 caps) will leave Celtic, after new Celtic boss Neil Lennon has refused to offer him a new contract, after his contract ran out last Wednesday.
But we have a hard job believing this story, which is in the News of the World, because Naylor is now 30 years-old, and way over the age of players that Chris Hughton is said to want to recruit this summer.
Lee played over 300 games for Wolves from 1996, when he left school, to 2006 when he moved north to the Scottish club for a £600K fee.
He has over 100 appearances for the Celtic powerhouse, and Bolton manager Owen Coyle is also thought to have an interest in the 5’10” Walsall-born Naylor.
The only reason we would think this move makes any sense at Newcastle is that Lee would simply be a back-up to Jose Enrique, and of course he would be encouraged to win the left back position and make it his own.
But we’re not sure there can be too much truth in this story, if we were to be honest.
