Tom Cleverley And Others On Their Way To Tyneside

10:25 am, Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 by Ed Harrison · 22 Comments

Things have picked up significantly this week, with most Premier league clubs starting their pre-season training and the World Cup in South Africa, which has been some tournament winds down and will end with the final this Sunday.

Tom Cleverley – expected at Newcastle on season long loan deal

Newcastle have been interested in Tom Cleverly the Manchester United winger for some time now and there has been persistent news over the last few days that Chris Hughton is going the get the deal done, and get Tom on Tyneside for the coming season.

That could happen even any day now with Alex Ferguson already deciding he will send the youngster out on loan and what club better then Newcastle United?   Yes, there’s a little bit of bias there.

Chris will bring in at least one more player and over the summer the other two loan signings that have featured in the news prominently have been Jack Wilshere of Arsenal and Danny Welbeck of Manchester United.

But in the last week we have been linked with other top youngsters, including 19 year-old midfielder Henri Lansbury of Arsenal, Kyle Naughton, the 21 year-old Tottenham full-back,  and 20 year-old Danny Rose, the very promising winger also at Spurs.

We think Tom will arrive from the Red devils so then the question is who will be the second loan signing.

Take you pick between the above – but it will probably come down to which position Chris wants strengthening, and which players he will be bringing in via transfer fees – but we’d just love to see jack Wilshere arriving for a season long loan deal.

And it looks like Jack may even get a call-up to the full England squad next month, as the England team tries to recover from their rather sever embarrassments in South Africa.

As one of my American friends told me yesterday, every country in this World Cup have shown spirit and fight – with one notable exception – England.

And there is persistent news that Newcastle are still after Toulouse forward Fode Mansare, and at £1.5M Chris may also be bringing him to Tyneside this summer, but at 28 years old he seems a little old.

And it’s looking like Chris could sign as many as 5 players this summer, and he will no doubt want to get them in as soon as possible, so they have time to gel with the squad, and be on the upcoming week in Dublin, but the lads will be travelling to Ireland tomorrow.

It seems unlikely now that Hughton will now be signing any free agents this summer, with their contracts having ran out a week ago, and they will be being fixed up at other clubs, but we suppose there’s still a little time to sing these – if Chris is indeed interested in any of them.

With Chris having just signed cover at full back in James Perch – and he seems a good catch (sorry) – that would seem to rule out bringing in Kyle Naughton.

But it seems a little bit of a chess game for Hughton to play, but we do expect Tom Cleverley to be one of the loan signings and that could be announced even this week.

Comments welcome.

I still feel like we need one good player going forward – someone who can score goals
    A better RB
And cover all over – but nit too much

cleverley is a good player, but we dont need kids, we need proven players to improve our starting eleven, we need a creative proven CM, a striker to play with carroll, and another winger, and I still say a RB as perch surely cant start, he has got to be defensive cover like hall was. Dont get me wrong I like rose, cleverley, naughton, lansbury (best out of the players we have been linked to by a country mile) but would prefer players like sidwell, seb larsson, konchesky, o hara etc for our first season back up

geordielad, I don’t always agree with you but I’m with you 100% on that one

  • 4 BlacknWhite Barmy // Jul 7, 2010 at 10:45 AM

We should be only looking at players on loan if an agreement to buy is also included – if not we are depriving our own youngsters of experience whilst bringing on other teams’ players

  • 5 Geordiedoonsooth // Jul 7, 2010 at 10:45 AM

geordielad880 I agree with you mate we need PL experience not loanees we have some good kids of our own like Ranger, Lua Lua, Donaldson, Vuckic, Inman & Airey to name a few

  • 6 BlacknWhite Barmy // Jul 7, 2010 at 10:49 AM

we have needed a Creative Midfeilder for at least three years – and before anyone mentions ASBO’s ability – forget it. We have had the same old stories about him being reformed and Hughton bleating along the lines of ‘ hes like a new signing’ yeah yeah yeah – sent off at OT no doubt

  • 7 geordielad880 // Jul 7, 2010 at 10:50 AM

yeah not many people do howay the lads lol :-) we need proven players for when we first go up, its ok getting players like perch, lansbury to strengthen the bench, but cant see wenger letting us have wiltshire, lansbury etc to just warm the bench, just have to wait and see really, i would quite like us to go for mark noble if he wasnt too expensive, there are so decent young proven players available for decent fees, a perfect summer for me would be:- bentley, onouha, noble, and a decent striker to partner carroll, but aint gonna happen.

I agree totally blackwhitebarmy and geordiedoonsouth, its stopping our young players from developing, i would say ranger, inman and vuckic are the only ones close to been ready for a chance at prem level, donalson, airey and lua lua arent good enough from what i have seen, and never will be.

we could go out and spend 20m and guarentee we will stay up pretty much, look at the side you could get for not too much money:-

    onouha——-s.taylor———collocini—-enrique

    bentley——-barton———-guthrie——jonas

    On the journal site
Chris Hughton has denied Newcastle are interested in Guinea striker Fode Mansare after the 28-year-old Toulouse striker was linked with a move this week.

He said: “He is not one of the players we are after although I’ve seen we have been linked with him. It’s not true, but it doesn’t concern me. There will always be speculation in football, it will be here next summer and in ten years time as well.”

Hughton has also denied the Magpies are close to finalising a loan deal for Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley.

flop just been reading the same thing myself, however he doesnt go as far as denying any interest in cleverley, just says its not close to been finalised, we will sign him on loan, tryed to last window, same as we did with perch.

No offense but Tom isnt too great NOT good enough to be loaned to us in the EPL he is of the calibre to be loaned to a team like Watford and thats it, WHY are we pursuring these useless Younger loan signings when we have better players in the team and even in our youth system, the ONLY point of the loan system is to get players who are proven in the league as a great player, so like a loan signing of Onouha, Ireland etc…

  • 12 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jul 7, 2010 at 11:18 AM

I would love to see Bentley come in.

I would also like to see Hughton bring in some experience, it is great that he is looking at youth but we need some experience and someone who is a proven Premiership goalscorer.

    Kevin Phillips!

  • 13 geordielad880 // Jul 7, 2010 at 11:20 AM

    kevin phillips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • 14 geordielad880 // Jul 7, 2010 at 11:22 AM

jokes aside phillips is a good player, but just signed a new contract, and he played for the mackems aswell, and he cant play 90 mins anymore, his legs cant take it, would still score goals, given chances, but best off where he is as a bit part player

  • 15 NUFC_Richyg01 // Jul 7, 2010 at 11:43 AM

Haha Geordielad, I woke you up there!!

I mean someone of that calibre and stature, someone proven at this level.

Other clubs who have come up have done similar and it has worked, look at the Smoggies with Merson.

  • 16 geordielad880 // Jul 7, 2010 at 1:12 PM

yeah you certainly did, you mean similar to what man utd done with henrik larrsen? experienced, scored goals, and proven, RAUL anyone?? lol

A agree we need a striker who will guarantee us 10-12 goals….that could be Carroll, but its abit of a risk to rely on him as nooone can really know how well he will do.

But a creative midfeilder? I’ve given this rant plenty of times. When guthrie moved to the middle of the park last season we started to score goals at will, nolan got 17 goals last season and barton came back from injury and put in some top class passes (routldge for plymouth, lovenkrands for last game of season.) Also Routledge came into the team and got a fair few assists and Jonas went to the world cup. I know the prem is tougher but players who shine that much in the championship should do a steady job in the prem. Birmingham finished top half with LEE BOWYER as their “creative midfielder”. Lets be honest every team in the country say they need a creative midfielder, and i doubt we could get a better one than barton at the moment.

However i do agree we could do with a right back who can defend, unless he sees Stevie T playing there. Also Henrik Larsson, what a signing he would be.

  • 18 Robby Bobson // Jul 7, 2010 at 2:04 PM

I think we should be looking to replace Butt more than a creative midfielder. Our team does lack the sort of player i like to call a Beast! In the mould of Abdoulaye Faye and Muamaba who can come in and shore it up and physically dominate.

I’d pick the turkish line-up;) Although I wouldn’t have Perch both on the bench and on the playing team, as well as I would change Cleverley for Barton.

  • 22 baro // Jul 7, 2010 at 8:25 PM

I hope we can get 2-3 more signings in. Would be brilliant if they are the right type of signings.
