News today from Nottingham Forest that Newcastle’s offer for James Perch quadrupled Perch’s wages.
Billy Davies – “I didn’t know I tell you”
There was some buzz yesterday that the Forest manager was not made aware of James Perch’s transfer to Newcastle recently, until the deal was completed.
And there is news today from Forest manager Billy Davies, that he is in fact happy at Nottingham Forest, and will certainly see out the two years left on his contract.
The Nottingham Forest Board are coming out and trying to quiet the controversy, and Forest Chief Executive Mark Arthur says that Davies was made aware of the club’s decision to accept Newcastle’s offer for Perch.
Arthur said yesterday:
“The Chairman had informed Billy on three separate occasions that, should we get another offer for James Perch from Newcastle that was acceptable to the business of the club, then we would not stand in his way.”
“Newcastle had also offered to quadruple Perch’s salary and therefore, with our reluctance to offer him a new contract, it would have been wrong to stand in his way.”
“When an offer came through that was acceptable to the board I phoned Billy to tell him of the offer and his response was that is the board’s decision, and so be it’.”
There will be different reactions from the Newcastle fans that Newcastle quadruped James’ salary to get him on Tyneside, and no wonder he was delighted to come. 😀
Some will say we are paying too much again, but we think the smaller wages Newcastle will now pay its players in the future, has been hugely over-played.
We think the club will offer competitive wages – but not the silly figures we have paid some players in the past – like Michael Owen as just one example, and that’s one reason we expect Andy Carroll, Steven Taylor and Tim Krul to sign new contracts for Newcastle this summer.
