Newcastle defender Mike Williamson seems impressed with Carlton House, where the lads are staying for a week, for some intensive training.
Mike Williamson – enjoying the experience in Ireland
Williamson quickly established himself in the Newcastle first team last season, after coming to Tyneside in late January, from Pompey.
And Mike is well aware of the impact that last summer’s training trip at Carlton House, just outside of Dublin, had on the team spirit in the Newcastle dressing room last season.
Mike said today:
“Obviously I wasn’t here last year but the gaffer told us that coming here worked well for us and we’re looking to do the same again.” “Trips like this really help, because although the lads are all really close and we have a tight-knit group, things like this can only improve that.”
“We all enjoy each others company and this is a brilliant exercise, not just for getting our fitness levels up, but also to get all the lads together.” “The start of the Premier League season is on everyone’s calendar and every training session we do is geared towards that.”
“As long as we’ve got a fully fit squad and everyone is fighting for places, then that can only be good and there’s a good camaraderie.”
Mike could well force himself into being a starter at Newcastle next season, but he will have some tremendous competition from both Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini for the two central defense positions, that’s for sure.
