Chris Hughton Blocks Celtic Move For Goalkeeper Steve Harper

Reports on Tuesday that Newcastle United have turned down a Glasgow Celtic move for number one goalkeeper Steve Harper.

Steve Harper – Newcastle have blocked a Celtic move for the player

It looks like current Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc has been targeted by Italian club Fiorentina in a deal worth about £3M, and Celtic seem to want Harper to replace the Polish International goalkeeper.

But Chris Hughton will not be tempted to sell long-serving Harper, who is a a key man both in the dressing room, and on the field for the Newcastle club, despite having two top class young keepers available in Fraser Forster and Tim Krul,  just waiting for their chance.

This story was news about three weeks ago, and when Boruc moves, the Celtic club will be left with just two goalkeepers in Lukasz Zaluska and Dominic Cervi.

So Chris Hughton has stopped any move for Harper dead in its tracks, as he sees the Easington-born goalkeeper as a key man for the Newcastle side, who are of course back in the Premier League next season.

Steve has 227 senior appearances in his career and 173 for his home-town club.

Harper is the only player to play in the Champion’s League, UEFA Cup, Premiership, Championship, League 1, League 2, Conference, League Cup, Intertoto Cup, FA Cup and FA Vase.

At least I think that’s all of them 😀

    Hmmm !
Yeah it`s a long season, better to have a reliable keeper and a decent backup, plus we can assume he is plus in the dressing room, having been around for ever, especially with a fairly youthfull side.

He does appear to be a vital part of our dressing room and he has been so loyal us. At the same time Krul looks a class keeper in the making

This is ANOTHER non-story. Why bother Ed? It’s pure conjecture to assume Celtic targeted him in the first place – and NO source regarding Hughton’s reponse!?!? It’s entirely manufactured from start to finish.

As an aussie im bound to be biased here, however mark schwarzer is a proven keeper, i mean at times he single handedly ‘kept’ fulham in the Euro cup last year.

Can’t afford to lose him. I don’t think even MA is dim-witted enough to sell him. Been at the Toon for too long for him to walk away. SH is at the club for the rest of his career now.

Well be prepared to lose Krul then, coz he ain’t going to wait round for ever. Harper is a competent keeper and I always thought he deserved more games when Given was around, but Hughton has to start seeing the bigger picture over sentiment now. All our managers, even the crap ones have always done something right. Dalglish = Solano, Allardyce = Kadar and Souness = KRUL.

our defensive record last year stands as testament to harper’s communication with the back four – for the first time in umpteen years the defense is settled and does’nt panic under pressure. We’d be mad to let such an important player leave now, and as for krul and forster they both know harper only needs to have a drop in form and they’re in with a chance of establishing themselves as the number one. Celtic will probably end up with shay – looks like joe hart has been awarded his shirt at Man c.

I also think Shay will end up at Celtic. Far better keeper than Hart but that is the way of things these days. All in all I hope Steve stays on at NUFC after his playing days are over – am I right in thinking he has an OU BA degree now?

Harper is a good solid keeper, in Krul and Forster we have more than adequate back up, however, I just think it’s a little too early for both of them just yet, however, I welcome the competition once they are ready.

Been a funny story this one – it has risen “ie Celtic buying Harper” and died “Hughton blocks move” without one single piece of evidence or official quote – other than blog entries from those “in the know”

Daniel – agree with Richy G – your blogs impossible to read – black backgrounds are usually a bad idea too. Classic White background and easy to read font will ensure you get a few more readers.

As sombody who suffers from colour blindness, the colours work really well for me Daniel. I agree that you need a better font though. Overall, not a bad first attempt mate. I will keep an eye on that one.
