Newcastle Linked With French Midfielder

There are reports in both France and Italy today that say both  Aston Villa and Newcastle United have made offers to sign AC Milan’s former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini.

Mathieu Flamini – a good experienced player

The 26-year-old was good while he was at Arsenal but has not had a successful move to Milan, after moving on a free transfer there in 2008.

The Marseilles-born player has struggled to keep a first team place at the famous Italian club, and was often played as a full-back.

When players get bogged don’t take to a new club, it’s often good to just move on and start fresh somewhere else.

And the defensive midfielder is a good player,  and would certainly strengthen the Newcastle squad and compete for a starting place on Tyneside.

Chris Hughton is said to be mulling over whether to try to get Flamini on a seaosn-long loan deal at Newcastle, as a precursor to signing the player next summer, with a transfer  fee agreed up front.

Flamini is an excellent professional, and would offer the Tyneside club some experience in their squad, and the lad’s character and temperament are said to be first rate.

Newcastle have Alan Smith, Joey Barton, Danny Guthrie and Kevin Nolan all fighting it out for central midfield positions, but Chris Hughton also wants to add quality and numbers to his squad.

Last season the 5’10”  midfielder had just 14 starts in 25 league appearances,  and an overall total of 29 appearances at the San Siro club.

A move back to the Premier League, where he was just great for Arsenal (153 appearances – 8 goals),  would be just what the player needs to reignite his career – and joining Newcastle would be a good deal for both the player and for the famous Tyneside  club.

We don’t know is this story has any truth in  it – but hey, we’d love to see Mathieu arrive on Tyneside – soon

Comments welcome.

I cant see him fitting in with the wage structure….especially when we already have Smith in defensive midfield on a ridiculous 60k a year.

I would take a gamble on him. As holding midfielders go, he is one of the better ones. Absolutely anonymous in games, right until the moment you need him. Pops out of nowhere, and possetion is yours.

I guess someone will buy him for a fee, but if we could get him on loan for 12 months & agree a fee for next summer when smithy’s contract runs-out it would be a good addition. I read that he has been played at fullback, wonder if it was left back?

From what I gather he has been playing RB for Milan. Not sure if he has ever been deployed on the LB slot noir9.

It’s a shame we still have players tied up on crazy wages from the Allardyce days.

Smith out, Flamini in would be great. A defensive midfielder who has a cool head on him and can score some goals.

loan with a view to buy when smiths contract runs out sounds like the one! any deal that mentions smiths contract running out is bound to sound like a good one

Was’nt aware Alan Smith’s contract will run out next year!

Can’t see Ashley letting him go on a free so expect him to be sold soon or extended….

Shame about Smith really. He was legendary in the first half of last season. I feel quite bad for wanting to have him replaced.

I would take Flamini if a sensible wage can be negotiated. He has quality and is still only 26 too.
It seems he has some versatility and a loan deal with an option to buy may be worth a shot. The rag man has made some extra sales perhaps he will put his hand in his trousers for a little bit of French?

I think Smith can still be a good player for us. I think he will still be learning his position and can mature into a better player because he has the right mentality.

i wouldn pay him 10 grand a week to ‘mature’ into a defensive midfielder, nevermind giving him 60 grand a week for the trouble of lettin him try a few positions out cos he couldnt cut it as a striker. and im sorry i dont see how ‘great’ he was in the first half of the season a few dodgy tackles and no goals dosnt impress me.

might be a ‘cracking lad’ and what ever but what a waste of a newcastle shirt and wage.

I think it would be good for NUFC overall to have an experienced Italian in the squad. The Italians have a good sense of ball control and patience on the ball without getting caught in possesion – I’d like to see some of that style rub off on the Magpies. I’d take a foreign player on lone, as it is not likely he will come back to bite us.

Flamini couldn’t be a bad signing for us. Getting people like that has the domino effect of making other big names take the plunge and consider coming up north like the KK days.

Anyone hear Hleb is available from Barca? couple of sites reporting he’s been offered around, like to see him at SJP

The right mentality for getting continually booked or sent off and giving stupid and dangerous free kicks away.
