Newcastle Reported Ready To Sign Gary Hooper

News this morning that Scunthorpe’s Gary Hooper appears set to join Newcastle United.

Gary Hooper – nearly a Newcastle player?

The Daily Express is reporting that Newcastle will pay a decent £2.5M for the 22-year-old striker,  who has 43 goals in 80 appearances for Scunthorpe, and stands 5’9″ tall.

Leeds United have been interested in the player for a while, but it would appear the transfer fee was a stumbling point – but not so for Newcastle.

Chris Hughton said yesterday he had money to spend in the transfer market – we suppose not much, but Chris was looking for bargain buys, and this lad may be a good buy – at £ 2.5M.

Gary turned 22 last January, and could be a perfect partner for Newcastle’s new number 9 striker Andy Carroll.

This is Gary’s career so far, with games played, and in brackets goals scored.

2004 -2006  Grays Athletic 69 (20)
2006–2008  Southend United 32 (2)
2007 –  Leyton Orient (loan) 4 (2)
2008 – Hereford United (loan) 19 (11)
2008– Scunthorpe United 80 (43)

By our reckoning the lad has scored 78 goals in 204 first class appearances.

Hooper scored an amazing 30 goals for Scunthorpe last season, having joined the club from Southend United in July, 2008, for a fee of £125,000.

This player is within the guidelines of players Newcastle would like to sign this summer, young players who still have improvement ahead of them.

We have no idea if this report is true, but assuming it is – what do you think of this player?

Comments welcome.

not really taken much notice of this lad, but my only concern is that again he is not PL proven, hopefully he will be able to make the step up if he does join, can’t be any worse than Best

hm…me too, do not know him. But I’m a little bit concerned if he can meet the EPL standards? Well if CH thinks he will, then let’s give him a try…his goal ratio speaks for him, but as said, he scored in lower leagues.

If we get this lad we have a lot of youngsters and a lot of potential but nothing proven. We will also have so many strikers that we will chop and change trying to give them all game time. Obviously our new Number 9 will be first choice most games so that leaves really only two to three other striker positions. Hooper seems small and quick so maybe he is the answer to Lovenkrands getting a bit on in the next year or so but otherwise shola and best will be competing for those two spots.

I also think when we look at goals Carroll scores for the club we need to acknowledge he rarely if ever takes a penalty. If he was the constast penalty taker which he may now be as number 9 he will add at least 4 to 5 goals to his name overthe length of a season

Scored a lot of goals in a struggling team, I’d rather have a keane or bellamy but thats not going to happen. Un-tested in the epl, but so are players from france, portugal & spain and at least no problems with the lingo etc.

I always thought Hooper would be a good signing, hes 22 and has a proven record in the english game, granted not in the PL, but if given the right service he could put a few away for us. Nicky Maynard looks like a good player as well.

Shola has passed it now, he scored goals in the Championship, but hes pushing 28, if im correct, and he can’t keep up with the pace of the PL. We should give Xisco a couple of games and sell him in january window if hes struggling.

I don’t understand. People want players with potential, but with EPL experience. That makes little sense. Young players have to start somewhere. There are only 20 premier league teams at any given time. Surely these aren’t the only teams nurturing the stars of the future.

For those of you feeling that EPL experience is a must, do try to remember the team that got us relegated and the team that were recently made to look like an average sunday pub league side at the world cup.

    Potential is everywhere.

…I notice that numerous posters on here have said that one of our priorities should be to get a quick, small striker to partner Carroll, but other’s are saying that we already have enough….

    What’s the dealio?

I think this lad would be a great replacement for Shola and Xisco. He might not have their experience, but I don’t reckon they’ll give us much in the Premier League anyway, so he’s got to be worth a punt.

I honestly didnt hear about Hooper scoring 19 championship goals – he must have had a late run. But this shows that he goes about his football in the right way and can produce the goods in a team at the wrong end of a league.
Maynard has scored some spectacular goals, the one against us was pretty nice, but Hooper seems an equally good prospect if less fashionable.
