Hughton Working Hard To Bring More New Faces To Newcastle

It’s always a bit of a game in the summer to try to guess which players Newcastle United are really after.

JLloyd Samuel – on his way to Newcastle?

Of course we are always linked with so many players in the summer, it’s almost a standing joke.   Let’s rephrase that – we are linked with so many players in the summer, it is a standing joke.

Newcastle got Dan Gosling on a free transfer from Everton yesterday, but there are reports today that Chris still wants to bring in a defender, midfielder and striker, before the end of August.

Tom Cleverley and JLloyd Samuel are two that may arrive before too long at Newcastle.

Chris talked about working hard behind the scenes:

“We are working very hard behind the scenes and I’m very confident that we will be able to bring in what we need to bring in,”

“It is a work in progress but we’re making enquiries. I said at the end of last season we don’t need very many, and yes I would anticipate it to be less than five (coming in).”

“If someone becomes available that may change, but I think we already have a good squad here and anyone coming in has to add to that.”

I think everyone appreciates that the days of big spending are in the past at this particular time.”

We’re not at all discouraged that Newcastle’s big spending days are over, because 80% of  the money spent on transfers over the last 15 years or so – was just wasted.

In fact we like that Newcastle are doing some bargain deals – like Dan Gosling from Everton for nothing, zippo, nought.

That has to be a super deal, let’s at least admit that.

Comments welcome.

Good grief Ed, surely there’s an award for “Most Dedicated Blogger” we can enter you for?!

By the way, I’m guessing that Gosling has been brought in to play central midfield and that that is his main/only position? In which case we really do have a lot of midfielders now…

So assuming we play a 442, who will our central midfield two be?! I have to admit though, I can see us playing Carroll up front with Nolan just behind, although I do worry that that won’t produce enough goals…

I’d imagine Gosling isn’t just for central midfield cover as he can play right mid very well and cover for right back! I think our centre mid should be barton and nolan with lovenkrands and carroll up top, this would surely birng more goals?

Cleverly will pevent our own youngsters getting on.

J Lloyd Samuel doesn’t fit any critieria – too old and nowhere near good enough

Sol campbell – aging bling boy who arguably would be ok on a coaching basis but has a history of injury, money grabbing and walking out on teams.

Give us exciting signings like de Guzman, Albin and Drenthe and maybe aim a bit higher than finishing 17th.

Albin and de Guzman would be great but Drenthe surely is a bit out of reach? we need to remember that we have just got back into the prem amd so far, getting young english players is looking good!

It might be useful to take a look at Man City’s fringe players. I’ve counted 30players over 21. With the squad restrictions of 25 over 21s and the fact they seriously want to sign Kolarov,Milner, Donovan and Balotelli if rumours are believed – some decent players will become available.
They will be in no position to negotiate a price despite their riches and perhaps some more experienced players may have to take season long loans.

i would like to see campbell arrive for experience to bring on steven taylor, patrick van arnold for cover for left back for enrique, i would take juan albin if he is free, plus he is only 24. Would like a midfielder with a bit of gile and craft, then 2 centre forwards who can score us some goals, and i think then we will be ok.

@Paul P: Mate, the idea here is to have a big enough squad to sustain the season while being small enough to offer competition. If I was a CM at NUFC right now I’d be a bit concerned about getting a starting place.

LB, LW/RW (note: not RM/LM – we have more than enough utility players for that) and maybe a pacey striker who can fill the no. 10 role.

I think we lack that bit of natural class in terms of attacking options. If we don’t take De Guzman on a free transfer I think that’s a real chance missed. I’d also like to see Nicky Maynard here please! I get the impression he’s the big fish at Bristol, but put him into the squad we have here maybe he’d work hard and add that to his flair in front of goal it wouldn’t be bad for a few mil?

Well face it, bringing in a hopefull worth no more than £4m. who won`t be available untill the season is half over is not exactly something to get excited about.
As far as discovering young future stars in the lower divisions, c`mon they have all been scouted and evaluated, aint no more Bassongs in the lower divisions.
However the recent w/cup. has revealed there`s a whole lot of decent available players in the western hemisphere, from the US to Chile,
Perhaps that`s where we should be looking.
It appears our scouting system is somewhat parochial in nature, dont want to spend the bucks perhaps, but that`s where the talent is located, not just Brasil and The River Plate areas but all over the southern continent and even to a lesser degree as far north as the US & Canada.
So we, as a club of some standing, satte of the art stadium with allmost sellout home crowds.
Seems to me, if some of the best football is played by S/American, and they get paid a lot less than their european counterparts.
Plus the latin style of football with it`s shortpassing possession football combined with tactical and technical innovations has changed the game.
Yet appears the people we are looking at are playing for teams like Scunthorpe and Stockport .
Mike, if NUFC is not supposedto be about Entertainment, what is it,

Suprisingly no clubs bid for Stephen Ireland yet. Hope Mancity will go on buying new playerss…

Top Three MY wishlist (which are quite possible to join us):

    1) Weiss (we should get him! )
2)Ireland ( If no club bids for him then we should)
    3) Ben Arfa (used to be one of the best young prospect, inconsistent for the last 2 seasons but worth a try)
