Newcastle Reported After Argentine World Cup Star

News today in The Sun that Newcastle United are ready to bid for £8.5M rated Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi from his home-town club, Velez Sarsfield.

Nicolas Otamendi – Newcastle interested?

If you remember he was the young lad, just 22 years-old,  who replaced Jonas Gutierrez at right back, after the first two World Cup games, when the Newcastle player was suspended, and Nicholas kept his place for the rest of the tournament.

The Sun is reporting that Newcastle’s Chris Hughton is at the head of the queue for the Argentine, but surely not for £8.5M.

Maybe £4M is a more realistic price, but there’s little doubt this player is already a good player.

And if Newcastle are really interested (who knows?), we would expect our other two Argentine stars, Coloccini and Gutierrez to assist in persuading the player to move to Tyneside – if that is necessary.

The 6′ tall player is a more natural center-back, although he can also play at right back, and while he played great against Mexico, he received a lot of criticism for his weak performance against Germany in the quarter finals.

But Nicholas certainly fits the profile of players Chris wants to bring to the club this summer, and he’s played around 40 times for his Argentine club, based in the Liniers neighborhood of western Buenos Aires, and 10 times for the National side.

Maybe Chris will comment on this rumor later today, and if he doesn’t, that could even mean the news could be accurate. Well,  we suppose anything is possible in football. 😀

Talking about a possible move, Otamendi said:

“I wouldn’t think twice about moving.”

Comments welcome.

This lad is supposedly the next big defender in Argentine team and is been courted by the likes of AC Milan. I think he would be good in England, but cannot see him coming to north-east.

Mate, i didnt see Spidey and Colo signing for us either and like Ed mentioned in his article, us having the two argentines already, doesn’t hurt our chances does it?

But for over 8 million????? HELL NO

if we are going to pay 8 million, then surely we need to be focussing on another area of the field such as centre midfield or up front. that has got to be priority.

for 8 million we can get stephen ireland in, who would be a great addition to our team.

I think we should get him. He is a high energy player gives 110% to the team and fits in the right age of players we are looking.

I have 2 points to make, why if we are limited on funds would we want to spend £8m on a player who plays in an area we already have lots of cover for, ie right back/center back & again if we have £8m, why not get in a decent left back to cover/challenge Enrique & still have enough to buy a semi decent creative midfield player to boot.. ???

Also, is it Sunday as these strange stories normally appear on the Sunday Crap-loids, not mid/late week one’s 🙂

Has Steven Taylor signed a new contract yet? If not the money achieved on his sale could buy Otamendi for say 4 mil and leave the remainder..circa 4 mil to spend on a decent creative pair of feet in the middle of the park?
I’m not saying Taylor should go but CH obviously is taking this season seriously and we are 2nd guessing his plans. I think he’ll come through and we will have a solid sensible season finishing 10th…… and maybe a little cup run….hope springs eternal. HWTL

Naah. I don`t believe this is true. 8.5 m £ is a lot of money to pay for a player, especially for a former championship club – even if the clubs name is Newcastle United.

Would probably have been a good buy, though, if the fee was 3 – 4 m £ – then maybe.

good player but …Millan, Madrid , Byern and Fiorentina want him …if he comes here our formation would look like this
    Krul
    Otamendi–Taylour–Colo–jose
    Gosling–Danny–Nolan–jonas
    Barton
    Carroll

i still think it is other areas where we need to concentrate on. centre midfield, bit of craft, gile is what we should be looking at and also someone who can bag us 15-20 goals in a season in order to keep us up.

Some potential players i think could do a job in midfield are

tom cleverley, jack wiltshire, steven ireland, giovanni des santos, hatem ben arfa, mathias flamini, anthony annan, I would love us to get ozil but we will never sign him.

Striker wise, love us to sign luis suarez, but we will never get him, so why dont we sign someone like that neymar(brazillian wonderkid), asamoah gyan, someone with a bit of power and pace and something different to what we have.

We do NOT need to prioritize centre midfield. What bollocks. Guthrie, Nolan, Barton, Smith, Vuckic. A speedy class striker is our top top priority. A class back like Otamendi would be fantastic, but seemingly a bit too expensive..

You don’t believe that we’d have a chance of getting anyone of those? And if we’d get them, we would smash the salary budget.

We need three more signings: 1) Forward to play off Carroll 2) Winger cover for our only 2 out and out wide men 3) Cover/competitor for Jose.

Newutd is right, there is no way we need any more CM players, nor CB/RB cover, esp if the Sol ends up at the Toon. Otamendi would be a real coup for us but a hell of a waste of money in that area of the squad.

Paul P, time to lower your expectations on the forward front methinks :)! Regardless, even if we had all the money and stature for Neymar he would be a waste anyway; Brazilians never play at their best in the premiership. Admittedly, him playing at half his rate would be better than any of our other options up front by some way…

Another one straight out of the rumour mill I think! great player and I’d love to be wrong but he’s probably got offers from spain and italy.

@Paul P, Ireland would be a great shout if we had that kinda cash to spend but he’s not all there upstairs, sandwich short of a picnic type, the guys got a pink range rover sport!! but great player and one who’d really rip it up for us

So you would`nt have S. Ireland because he owns a pink car, thats an unusual reason and oh you have done an evaluation of his mental processes and found him to be not all there, is it ?
What about his footballing skills, possibly the best attacking/ playmaking inside midfielder/behind the striker , player in the EPL, Mancini is the one who needs a mental evaluation.
To offer £24m. for Milner and sell someone with Irelands talent, pink car included is IMO
    simply insane.
Milner is no where close to being as good a player as Ireland.
Would love to see him in black and white, would improve the side enormously.

This sounds to good to be true. He is a massive talent. He is however not a right back but a natural center back. One on one he is insanely strong.

He is also a natural born leader and could be a future captain.

His only fault is that he receives quite a lot of cards.

Maybe a swap deal with Colo plus 4 mil.?

‘If you remember he was the young lad, just 22 years-old, who replaced Jonas Gutierrez at right back..’

I also remember he wasn’t that good in that game (in fact he was crap) and the Argentine defence as a whole let them down badly in the end. I also remember that 8.5m is way too much to risk when we are supposed to be past our big money signing days (where ‘80% of them were rubbish’ to quote Ed from elsewhere).

Doha Mag is right £3.5m tops, and even that is pushing it. We can’t do all the hard work in getting quality signings on a shoestring than blow the kitty on yet another right sided defender.

PS: Dr Zelig, are you feeling OK? Colo is one of our finest assets, and a much better player than this lad. We can’t afford another Argentinian to have ‘first season n the Prem’ wobbles like Jonas and Colo back in 2008. If we shell out big bucks, it must be on someone with a proven Prem record.

This guy is a class above what we have at RB on any day. I would ship Ryan Taylor away right now. He is so vulnerable at RB, and cant really contribute much from open play, apart from set-pieces.

If we get this lad, we have a really strong back 4, and defence is always the foundation of every team, would be a great investment imo.

read the post properly before having a go
Actually said “great player and one who’d really rip it up for us”. I also live near where he’s from and where his bird’s home is, so his “issues” are well documented. Some of the opinions that are posted here aren’t all just plucked out of the air some are fact.
merely hinting @him not having the right attitude
Pink car or no pink car his head’s not 100% and thats not opinion!
You’re completely right about him being one of the best though, Mancini is a fool if he lets him go.

Interesting if true, that we may be looking IN South America, rather than buying south americans from continental sides, mainly Portuguese or Spanish sides with their value added prices.
Following the W/cup. and observing the resurgence of teams like Chile , Paraguay& Uruguay, all playing an attractive game of football.
It would behoove a club like NUFC to employ a scouting system in the area, where talented could be bought directly.
After all this club is no stranger (especially to Chilenos) fielding players like the Robledo brothers and Nobby.
