Hughton – We Have To Be Prepared For Injuries

News today that Steven Taylor is out until October, and James Perch has picked up a minor injury which means Chris will need to strengthen this summer.

Chris Hughton – will strengthen further this summer

Chris talked to the Sunday Sun today about strengthening the squad:

“I have said all along that we need to make additions to the squad,” “We know it’s going to be a tough season and we know we will go through periods where we pick up injuries.”

“We have to be prepared for that. I don’t think this game really changed anything – we knew that we needed players and we know that it will be tougher to get through injuries to key men next year.”

“We need to bring in players in the right positions and we know that we need to strengthen.”  “But as I have said before, the nucleus of the squad will be those that won the Championship last season – they deserve their opportunity.”

There’s really not much new news there from Chris, but it would appear that Hughton will need to strengthen in central defense, although young James Tavernier played the full 90 minutes yesterday and looked very steady in defense.

Comments welcome.

James Tavernier and Haris Vuckic were the reserves teams stand outt performers for me last season. Think Tavernier is better suited to full back tho not centre back

GK- Harper, Krul, Soderberg. Send Forster out on loan.

RB- S Taylor should be first choice; Simpson, R Taylor and Perch as back up. Perch will start against MU i suppose. Not the strongest area but we have plenty of options especially when Gosling returns.

LB- Enrique. Need a back-up.Van Aanholt would be good but Chelsea would not release him if he don’t play regular football. I suggest Samuel who would have no problem playing second fiddle. What you guys think of Silvestre who available for free and can play both left and centre?

CB- Colo, Williamson, Kadar, S Taylor. Perch can play there too. I still think we need one more considering our history of injuries. That’s where Silvestre would be a good choice.

CM- Nolan, Guthrie, Barton, Smith, Gosling and Perch. Plenty of option but the lack of speed can be a weakness. People say Vuckic is an option but I think Hughton will play him as a striker or at the wings. I hope Smith can be sold to free up the wages for other areas to be strengthen. He has passion but gives away too many free kicks and not very good with the ball

RM/LM- Jonas, Routledge, R Taylor. R Taylor is still confused about his best position… his best days were with Wigan at LM. Guthrie and Barton is ineffective at the wings. This is the area that needs attention. Djalo from what I seen him is similar to Nani, and I would prefer him. Ben Arfa is talented but can be frustrating and has attitude probs. Cleverly is awesome but we can’t promise him first choice. Weiss has good skills but is not very intelligent in terms of decision making. Btw, I believe Routledge is going to have a massive season for us.

CF-Carroll, Shola, Loverboy, Best, Xisco, Vuckic, Ranger. I personally would prefer Ameobi over Carroll because he holds the ball much better and is a better finisher. But he gets injured too easily. People say he is too slow, but a targetman doesn’t need that much speed. Shearer wasn’t the fastest but he holds the ball so well. I would give Xisco a chance cause I think he’s a good player, faking injury or not. Needs a speedy striker though. What happened to that Morimoto rumour?

    Coach Singamagpie…

i’m totally agree with you mate about all you have said, and about give chance to xisco, if we don’t have any pace and speed striker, we need him…

whatever, as long as we all have good team spirit, we can chance the result of a game… good game not depend on a player, but on a team…Howay The Lads

To sign Ben Arfa would be a coup.
Sure he is supposedly difficult, but then Hughton appears to be the type who can get the best out of players, if last season is anything to judge by.
We have a number of people who can play up front, perhaps too many and none are exactly top level, in which case instead of continuing to buy second tier players lets go for someone that`s top shelf.
What i am suggesting is less quantity and more quality, we can if needed, blood some of our top youngsters if injuries make it neccessary.

    Spot on singamagpie
Xisco could come good, if he settles and gets some game time then he could make an impact…..he’s young too and hopefully trying to get his career back on track

Lack of pace in the midfield is a big worry and it might mean we’re stuck with a 4-1-4-1 formation with smith/barton/guthrie sweeping up in front of the back 4……
possibly get rid of some of the dead weight up front instead of in the middle? best, shameobi and lovenkrands out to be replaced with one quality signing
