Report That Newcastle In Bid For Marseilles’ Ben Arfa

French daily L’Equipe have confirmed that Olympique Marseille have received offers for midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa from both Newcastle United and Werder Bremen.

Ben Arfa – have Newcastle bid for this 23 year-old player?

But before we get too carried away with this news, that paper also linked Newcastle recently with 33 year-old Paris St Germain’s attacking midfielder Ludovic Giuly – and that turned out to be incorrect.

But Chris Hughton has already said he thinks Ben Arfa is a cracking player so maybe this story is true – maybe – but hey it’s also another Sunday we have to remember.

Last week Chris also said to no bid had been made by Newcastle for the player, while at the same time saying he thought the 23 year-old winger/attacking midfielder, who is under contract at Marseilles until 2012, is very good.

The Frenchman has played for all the France Youth sides at every level from U16, and currently has 7 caps for France – but he is said to be unsettled under manager Didier Deschamps at Marseilles.

Links with Werder Bremen and Newcastle United were reported earlier in the week with Newcastle manager Chris Hughton commenting to the Newcastle Journal:

“I read about Ben Arfa”“He is a cracking player and it’s nice to see us linked with him, but there has been absolutely no contact there whatsoever.”

That didn’t stop L’Equipe coming out with the story today, with confirmation of an offer from Newcastle for the player, who was at the famous Clairefontaine Academy.

Ben Arfa may come as cheaply as £5M – and Hughton was quoted last week as saying Newcastle wanted to pick up some bargains, so maybe Newcastle have bid for this player.

The 23 year-old’s disciplinary record at his clubs is not good however, and there have been several altercations between the lad and his team-mates.

One was with Djibril Cisse, another with Sebastien Schillachi and a further rift with Karim Benzema – and he doesn’t get on too well with manager Didier Deschamps, the former French captain.

So we wonder if he is the kind of player Hughton would want right now at Newcastle – but of course there’s always two sides to any story.

His difficulties at his clubs was thought to be one reason for Ben Arfa missing the cut for Raymond Domenech’s World Cup campaign – but of course France were worse than hopeless in that tournament.

Ben Arfa can play on the left side of midfield or play just behind the strikers, and is a very skillful player indeed, and could be a big hit on Tyneside.

The lad turns 24 next March, so is the right age, and he has played for both Lyon and Marseilles, but  surprisingly only has 13 appearances for Marseilles and 5 goals since moving there in 2008.

The Clamart, France born player is 5’11” tall and played 87 times with 11 goals fro Lyon since 2004.

What do you think about this story – comments very welcome.

No chance! Surely he is on more than 35k a week and he’ll be looking for a move to a top six club prob spurs or Liverpool. Punching way above our weight with him we have only just been promoted ffs. I hope I have to eat my words haha

At least it shows some ambition and going for a player with a bit of star quality.

by the sounds of it him and barton will get on like a house on fire!!

webbo, i dont reckon he’ll be on anywhere near 35k/week, he’s playing in france remember.

CH woont bring the lad to the club if he’s gonna be another N’zogbia… petulant moaning child so we’ll just have to wait and see if we get to the stage where CH can have a proper chat with the lad and decide then

Would be a great player as he would give us options on the wings or in the centre , was allways talked up as a up and coming star very skillfull just hope if this was true his attitude would be in the right place

He could be just what Barton needs! A sparring partner!

On a footballing note, I would love to have him at the club!

I hope this is true. We are missing just the type of player Hatem Ben Arfa is. He attacks defenders, which not many of our players do. Just Jonas and Routledge. No more toon players do that. 5-6 million is my opinion is nothing for this player. Hopefully a deal can be agreed for Ben Arfa.

There`s an opportunity right now for this club to cut the amount of time it will take to become a top six side, a profitable and a very sellable club.
A Ben Arfa signing plus the possibility of bringing in any of eight top class players currently being unloaded by Citeh to comply with the recent introduction of a limitation of a 25 man roster, for all EPL sides.
With Onuoha, Ireland, Johnson ,Richards, De Jong, all availabl and most fitting the age profile
A bit of well spent dosh could change this side from a bunch of mostly plodders to a competitive EPL side.
The opportunity may never arise again where so many quality players have to be sold from one club.

    _________ Ben Arfa_________
    _________ Carroll__________

A team with a bit of pace , young, could be partially funded by sales of some of the present Journeyman and and those who`s present salaries are over the top Smith, Simpson, R. Taylor, Best, etc.

Sorry to dampen your tune Chuck but none of the Citey stars would take a pay cut to £35k a week, so we’ve got no chance of signing them!!

As for Arfa, if you ook at the players he’s had trouble with, all 3 of them are suppsed to be troublsome players too, so it may not be him but them… 🙂

I don’t think he’ll come to us but its the sort of players we should be looking to sign if possible 🙂

    So laidback
Erm , not sure whether you agree or disagree, seems you covered all bases ?
Just read where Ireland has had a run in with Mancini and will probably be sold, there`s a couple of others i would kike to see in the black and white.
Companey, Onuahu, De Jong, Richards, Johnson, any one or two along with Ireland could make this a competitive side and a future top six club.
But then what do i know ?
