Campbell Will Not Be Skipper – Is Nolan Odds-On Favorite?

We had read in the People newspaper last Sunday, a report from former Evening Chronicle reporter Alan Oliver, that Sol Campbell would be the new Newcastle captain.

Kevin Nolan – new Newcastle captain?

But since Sol hadn’t even signed for the club and at the time was still on his honeymoon, we thought that was a bit of a stretch – a bridge too far if you like.

And Chris Hughton has quelled the talk about Sol bring captain as he told the Evening Chronicle today:

“I can categorically say that Sol will not be captain.”

I can completely rule that out and there is no truth in the talk that he will skipper this season.”

“That is still to be confirmed.”

We have to believe that Kevin Nolan will be the new captain, and are wondering why it seems to be taking Chris so long to name his captain for a season that will be so crucial to the club.

In our poll for captain last month Kevin was top with 63.5%, Steven Taylor was second with 16.4% and Alan Smith was third with 12.6% –  so there was big support for Kevin as captain next season.

We think he’d make a  great captain for Newcastle, as he epitomizes the spirit at the club right now.

And he did an excellent job when he was captain of Bolton Wanderers, and was outstanding both on and off the field for Newcastle last season.

maybe giving joey b the armband might stop him becoming a serial killer? would be good to see joey become the player that he is capable of doing so! but kev definitely deserves it

Good point. The armband would match Joey’s ankle bracelet.

Nolan has to be Newastle’s captain next season; just can’t see Smith being a first team starter for home games this season; Barton ticks all the boxes but not when at Newcastle, i.e. disciplinary record and injuries; Steven Taylor is injured for the next three months although if we can extend his contract he’s our long term skipper……

i would make barton skipper as the responsibility to lead may quell any nastiness that may still linger. i do think that barton is a changed man

I think Kevin Nolan should be our captain and has to show consistency every game. He has excellent leadership. And can score goals. 🙂

Nolan should be captain as, even when not captain last season, he was the one who got the new boys out for a meal with their families etc. Mike Williamson AND Wayne Routledge both said mentioned him in particular!

Nolan gets my vote, however sometime he does lose his rag and gets a silly booking. Watford (h) is the best example I can think of, or tackling Anichebe at SJP 08/09.

Stephen T as captain? he’s so immature and daft as a brush. Certainly couldn’t command respect from the other players. Also puts on weight and now has suspect shoulders.
