Newcastle Reserves Cruise To 3-0 Win In Beardsley’s First Game

Newcastle United Reserves won 3-0 last night at   Gateshead,  in what was Peter Beardsley’s first game in charge.

Peter Beardsley – Reserves 3-0 win against Gateshead

Peter was appointed earlier in the week to replace the departed Alan Thompson, who left for Celtic, and it’s always nice to get off to a winning start.

Newcastle went ahead on just nine minutes when Nike Ranger put the ball home following a nice cross from the left wing by McDermott.

Newcastle were two up after 30 minutes when Ranger slipped the ball to Haris Vuckic and the young Slovenian, who has a knack for goals, hit a left foot shot through goalkeeper McKeown’s legs.

And then McKeown, who is on trial from Peterborough United, was badly at fault as he conceded an own goal just before half time.

Gateshead tried to come back after the break, but the home side was always going to find it tough to break through a solid Newcastle defense.

And just 16 minutes from time Ryan Donaldson, who has been on duty for the England U19s over the last couple of weeks, had a shot well saved by McKeown.

The game ended in a comfortable 3-0 win for the youngsters, and a good start for the Reserves side under the stewardship of Peter Beardsley.

Gateshead: McKeown, Baxter, Heckingbottom (Brown 70), Gate, Morris, Clark, Marwood, Ferrell (Francis 83), Wake (Dowson 70), Allan (Fisher 63), Challinor (Turnbull 46).

Newcastle: Alnwick, Newton (Nicholson 72), Dummett, McDermott, Grieve (Nzuzi 46), Henderson, LuaLua (Ameobi 46), Inman, Ranger (D Taylor 67), Vuckic (Donaldson 46), Edmundsson (Knight 75).

A decent win from a very young side. Is young Phil Airy out inured?

I wonder how many of those youngsters will be loaned out this season to get first team football; Ranger, Forster, Lua Lua, Donaldson, Inman……
